According to research on bilingual education, the following are the results for students who go through the system:

Better performance academically (Gallagher & Hanna, 2002). Easier to learn a third and a fourth language (Cenoz & Valencia 1994). An understanding and openness to other cultures (Gallagher & Hanna, 2002). Improvement in cognitive functioning in creativity and communication (Bialystok et al. 2005). Higher scores in English and Maths (Education Research Centre, 2011)

Enhanced awareness of identity, culture and sense of community (Baker, 2003)

Increased Self Esteem (Baker, 2003)

Bilingual Education enriches academic productivity, creative talents andself-esteem in students (NMABE, 2006; Cummins, 2000)

Improved communication and social skills (Cummins, 2000)

📚 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 — 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻?

This school year marks an important next stage in the introduction of Ireland’s redeveloped Primary School Curriculum.

But parents shouldn’t expect everything their child does in school to suddenly change overnight.

The new curriculum is being introduced gradually, with schools supported to work through the different curriculum areas over a number of years. From the 2026/27 school year, schools can focus on one curriculum area each year, with each area taking time to fully embed.

The five main curriculum areas are:

🎨 Arts Education
📖 Language
🌍 Social and Environmental Education
🔬 STEM Education
❤️ Wellbeing

And one of the things we really like about the work happening around the new curriculum is that children themselves were asked what they wanted to know about it.

Their questions included:

🌳 Will we learn outdoors more?
🧸 Will there be more time to play?
🙋 Will we have more choice in what we learn?
🕐 Will our timetable change?

Children told the NCCA that they wanted learning to be more varied, more enjoyable and to help them succeed.

The NCCA has now produced dedicated information for both parents and children, including a parent guide explaining what the redeveloped curriculum means and a child-friendly guide that families can look through together.

📚✨ A magical storytelling experience! / Eispéireas draíochta scéalaíochta! ✨📚

Today, Múinteoir Caitríona’s class had the most wonderful experience, Pádraig, the storyteller from Keel, Castlemaine, came to visit us! 🌟

Pádraig had the children completely captivated from start to finish with his beautiful stories, bringing characters, adventures and imagination to life. You could have heard a pin drop as the children were swept away into his wonderful world of storytelling! 📖✨

Go raibh maith agat, Pádraig, as such a memorable morning! 👏🌟

Bhí eispéireas iontach scéalaíochta ag rang Mhúinteoir Caitríona, nuair a tháinig Pádraig, an scéalaí ó Chaisleán na Mainge , ar cuairt chugainn! 🌟

Bhí na páistí faoi dhraíocht ó thús deireadh ag na scéalta áille a bhí ag Pádraig. Thug sé carachtair, eachtraí agus an tsamhlaíocht chun beatha agus thug sé na páistí ar thuras iontach i saol na scéalaíochta. 📖✨

The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a historical and art trail around Listowel during Writers’ Week last week. They learned about the town’s rich history and had the opportunity to explore its wonderful plaster works by Pat McAuliffe. A fantastic day filled with learning, fun and creativity! 📚🎨✨ .ie
