After seven years working as a Data Scientist in multinational companies, Deepak John Reji decided to return to academia to gain "a fresh perspective on how to use technology and AI efficiently."
While researching universities in Norway, the UK and Ireland, Deepak discovered University of Limerick through the Research Impact and UL Connect podcasts.
"These podcasts gave me good confidence about the level of research initiatives at UL, and the unique course offering combining data analytics with Sociology."
That combination led him to the MSc in Sociology and Data Analytics, a programme that brings together sociological and computational skills development alongside data analysis.
Throughout the programme, Deepak has explored key sociology topics, theories and frameworks while developing computational, statistical and data analysis skills. The programme focuses on both qualitative and quantitative research methods, with modules covering social exclusion, gender, culture and society, and urban sociology.
Students also develop quantitative research skills through statistical data modelling and practical labs using Stata.
A key part of the MSc is a 6–8 month structured research project. Deepak took a mixed methods approach to researching Societal attitudes towards Immigration in Ireland, under the guidance of Dr Brendan Halpin and Dr Emily Murphy.
Alongside his studies, Deepak has attended the Sociological Association of Ireland conference, where he met PhD students and professors from universities across Ireland. He has also taken part in interdisciplinary sessions with other University of Limerick departments.
Reflecting on his experience, Deepak said:
"I believe that it was the best decision I made last year to come to this university and join this course."
He also spoke about how the programme has influenced his professional development.
"On the professional side, I feel that I am gaining more knowledge and learning about how to use technology to enable research and analysis of social science problems."
Looking ahead, Deepak sees a wide range of opportunities after graduation.
"I think that I have more opportunities in my career than before, and it is just a matter of choosing the one that aligns with my goals and that I am happy with."
