Could the gender pay gap extend to AI?

New research found that an AI agent with a female appearance was paid 10% less than its male-presenting counterpart for the same work, despite using identical technology.

Participants in the study completed workplace tasks with the AI assistants and were then given real money to divide between themselves and the AI as a reward for completing the work.

The findings, co-authored by Dr Mary Hausfeld of UL’s Kemmy Business School, suggest familiar workplace biases could be reproduced as AI becomes increasingly part of working life.
