All are invited to Kilrossanty on the evening of Thursday August 20th at 7.30pm to partake in an event for Heritage Week. The evening will include a guided walking tour of the village (approx 2km), the unveiling of a new heritage sign and appreciation for the recent village enhancement works, followed by light refreshments. This event is a collaboration between Kilrossanty Remembers (local history & heritage group), Kilrossanty National School & Kilrossanty Tidy Towns. Mayor Cllr Liam Brazil will be in attendance to unveil the sign along with other guests.

Led by local teacher and historian Sรญle Murphy, the tour will depart Kilrossanty NS (X42 XW57) exploring the history of a once thriving rural village, its people and its buildings. This tour, which Sรญle has been leading for many years with students of Kilrossanty NS, delves into the various occupations and trades in the village as well as the architecture and the folklore of the area. Following the tour, there will be a ceremony to unveil the new heritage sign on the Chapel Road, a project undertaken by Katie Dee and Catherine Dunwoody in honour of Sรญleโ€™s dedication to history and her many years of work with the students of Kilrossanty N.S. during her tenure as teacher & principal and continuing throughout her retirement. Following a piece on the Kilrossanty Remembers blog about the school walking tours, there were a number of enquiries if they may be made available to adults and so the conversation started - how can we preserve this information so that it is available to locals and visitors alike, accessible to all and a fitting tribute to Sรญle? The process was not easy nor straightforward but thanks to the fantastic support of those within the heritage sector locally, such as Bernadette Guest (Waterford City & County Council Heritage Officer), Cllr Liam Brazil (now Mayor of Waterford City & County), Willie & Martin Whelan (Dรฉise Design & Waterford County Museum) and Jacinta Uniacke (Munster Signs & Prints), we finally have a sign which we can be very proud of and which we hope will be read for many years to come.

Kilrossanty Tidy Towns committee was formed in February 2026 and has achieved fantastic results in the village in this short time. From powerwashing to painting, weeding to planting, the village has come on leaps and bounds. It is wonderful to see such pride being shown in our locality and in the process, they have uncovered the old Pound and a churn stand which have been hidden for decades! The heritage group felt it was only fitting to invite the Tidy Towns group on board for this event to showcase their work, show appreciation for their time and effort and perhaps encourage new volunteers to join the group. It is our pleasure to highlight the work being done.

Kilrossanty NS staff are incredibly active in ensuring that the students are aware of their surroundings, the history, heritage and environment. They have collaborated with both Kilrossanty Remembers and Kilrossanty Tidy Towns and it is great to see the students showing enthusiasm and passion for their parish. As this tour was originally created for the students, it seems fitting to walk in their footsteps.

Thanks must go to Michael Walsh, Comeragh House for his work preparing the area for the sign, as it had to be erected behind the footpath but the stone wall had to be retained so we couldnโ€™t have had a better person on the job. Thanks also to Mary Walsh for her instant permission to realign the wall and do any clearance necessary and finally, thanks to Tommy Whelan, Jay Kirwan and the local council workers who arranged installation of the frame.

We hope you will join us on Thursday, August 20th at 7.30pm as we take a wander down memory lane.
