Im on abit of a buzz this week. I'm proud.. Our little rural ScallyWags PreSchool in the heart of Muckross has been awarded the Silver Stag intermediate level award , which is "awarded to schools that have successfully integrated deeper hands-on outdoor actions, active pupil-led environmental committees, and tangible habitat improvements"
A big line of description for embracing biodiversity, outdoor learning, and awareness of nature for a group of averagely 3-4 year old ScallyWags! Our first time submitting an entry and to get silver is so great. It's a big deal.
We worked for it...planted hawthorn, willow, and holly hedgerow often from cuttings and replants we found hiding under other shrubs. Not all our trees in our outdoor space are native, but we honoured the diversity and pruned back some of the non natives to give native a chance. We put up bird boxes, some made ourselves; a bat box, a bird care station out of an old dog bowl, a bee and a bug hotel, upcycled and sustainable. We drew a map to see what we needed to do..I think one of our favourite things was building a pond out of a flower box, and enjoying watching what creatures arrived to it. And we embraced no mow, not just for May but ongoing by picking shapes to create and strips to facilate play for cars, ball etc and and micro meadow of grass and wild growing. We were the only school, not just preschool, who won an award in South Kerry. Little us!! And a big congratulations to the places in North Kerry who also worked so hard to obtain awards. Its all towards a better education in nature for future generations. My wish is for the work started in early years is carried forward. Nature isn't just trees, insects, birds....nature is us.
