Beginning December 1, 2026, dressage riders competing at Third Level in USEF competition will no longer be permitted to use a double bridle. Instead, horses will compete in a snaffle bridle, with the first opportunity to use a double bridle moving to Fourth Level.

The rule change is intended to prevent horses younger than six years old from competing in a double bridle, since there is no minimum age requirement at Third Level, while Fourth Level horses must be at least six years old. The decision is part of a broader conversation around equine welfare and ensuring tack requirements align with horse maturity and training.

We love this community. But we can't ignore where it needs to do better.

Too many people have experienced bullying, intimidation, abuse, unsafe working environments or situations where concerns have not been taken seriously. You may have experienced it yourself. You may have witnessed it. You may have supported someone through it.

is a call to action for the entire equestrian community. It's a call to raise standards, take responsibility and stop looking away. Because creating a safer equestrian community isn't someone else's responsibility. It belongs to all of us.

Every one of us has the power to make a difference. The culture of our community is shaped by what we accept, what we challenge and what we're prepared to stand up for. When poor behaviour goes unchallenged, it becomes normalised. When concerns are ignored, trust is eroded. We all have a responsibility to hold each other to account.

Meaningful change happens when a community decides that enough is enough. And that's why EQUISS exists. We're here to bring people together, support those who need us, challenge where improvement is needed and help create the accountability, consistency and culture change the industry deserves.

Victims and survivors deserve better. Everyone who loves this community deserves better.

The future of our community won't be shaped by a handful of people. It will be shaped by all of us. The behaviour we challenge and our willingness to stop looking away.

The time for change isn't coming. It's now.

Welcoming Jacqueline Malone to the EQUISS Advisory Board.

Jacqueline brings over 25 years of equestrian coaching experience and deep psychological expertise. She supports riders in developing the personal and performance skills they need to persevere and thrive in and out of the saddle.

Jacqueline holds an MSc in Sports Psychology and is conducting ongoing doctoral research. Jacqueline has spent her career working with riders of all ages and levels, from grassroots to 5* competition. She founded Ahead for Horses to channel her passion for equestrian sport into practical, psychology-driven support, helping riders harness sports & performance psychology into their daily routine.

Her credentials span sport, commercial, business, coaching and equestrian practice as well as consulting in sport and performance psychology. She brings to EQUISS a deep understanding of the demands of the sport and the pressures and challenges that often go unspoken.

Despite breaking her back in a fall, she continues to compete on the European showjumping circuit, embodying the resilience and determination she helps others build.

Jacqueline's approach is rooted in a simple but powerful belief — that we are all people before we are riders or horsemen. She believes that every person, at every level, has the ability to reflect, develop and become better, not just as a competitor, but as a human being. That philosophy sits at the heart of everything she brings to EQUISS.
