Dr. Tamara de Ines Anton, organizer of this event, is really pleased to announce the screening of the documentary: “Monarca From North to South: Migrant Audiovisual Memory.”

“Monarca” brings together the voices and memories of twelve Nicaraguan artists living in Costa Rica. Produced by COPAL (Collective of Latin American Audiovisual Producers and Artists), the film was born out of an urgent need to sing, tell stories and heal from exile.
Our screening will be introduced by Antonio Monte , alongside the film’s director, Johanna Baca, who will share a little about the story behind “Monarca” and the journey of the project.

I’m especially looking forward to welcoming Leonardo Canales Vega who will perform a couple of pieces during the event — bringing some of the music and memories at the heart of the documentary into the room with us.

Leonardo and other artists involved in the documentary also contributed to the album “Monarca: Memoria Sonora del Exilio”, a collective record of songs about resistance, memory and regional solidarity. Check it out here: https://copalcolectivo.bandcamp.com/album/monarca-memoria-sonora-del-exilio

The event is a collaboration between the University of Galway - School of Languages Literatures and Cultures , the Arts in Action series, and the Institute for Creativity, University of Galway.

Dr Kate M Quinn from our School at University of Galway College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies was delighted to hear author John Connolly deliver his wonderful keynote in Spanish at the conference/literary festival Santiago Negro in Chile (pictured on the left yesterday. Today she met Ramón Díaz Eterovic (National Award for Literature) whose novel, "La oscura memoria de las armas", our Final Year BA class will study this semester. We are delighted that the University of Galway has announced the appointment of three new lecturers to Roinn na Gaeilge.

Dr Ailbhe Nic Giolla Chomhaill, Dr Colm Ó Cuaig and Dr Oisín Ó Muirthile have joined the University, bringing their highly-regarded expertise across folklore, Early Modern Irish, Celtic Studies and historical linguistics.

Dr John Walsh, Associate Professor of Irish at our School University of Galway and author of a forthcoming book on the report - Ar Lámh Shábhála: Coimisiún na Gaeltachta 1926 – was speaking to The Journal, reflecting on the lessons to be learned from what happened to that Commission’s report.

In an effort to shore up Irish speaking in the early years of the State, a Government commission suggested migrating a vast section of the Gaeltacht population to better land so they could prosper.
