Galway Technical Institute GTI is one of the leading colleges of Further Education in Ireland, providing QQI Level 5 & 6 courses GTI’s underlying philosophy is about learning together.

At GTI, courses are designed to be of immediate and practical use in the workplace or as a stepping stone to further study and higher qualifications. Everything our students learn will be valuable to them throughout their lives. Our Applied Learning approach is designed to enable students learn more effectively in real-life situations. Applied Learning provides our students with learning experiences that involve solving problems that are based on real-life situations. This involves learning the role of a sound engineer, in GTI's state of the art sound recording studio, film editor or production co-ordinator at CladdaTV. It may also involve working as a Beauty Therapist in GTI’s Poise Salon, or as a designer in GTI’s Annual Fashion Showcase. Each department has its own unique real-life, real-time production/event/project. By bringing the real world into the classroom and the classroom into the real world, Applied Learning has become the most effective and exciting way to learn the key skills required for the 21st Century. This is centred on learner activity, collaborative learning and critically, learning to learn. Facilities at GTI include recording studios, creative digital media laboratories, hairdressing and beauty salons, furniture design workshops, fashion studios plus a wide range of specialist IT facilities. Our European Links provide work placements abroad for over 100 GTI students annually. Students currently travel to France, Portugal, Spain, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Scotland and the Canary Islands. These placements are fully funded and afford students the opportunity to gain valuable work related training in institutions and enterprises throughout Europe. GTI’s mission is to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies of our learners by designing programmes that are innovative and of high quality, and to deliver the programmes in a learning environment that reflects the complexity and challenge of a changing world.

Today, students and staff at GTI came together to launch our new Green Campus Committee — a volunteer group of students and staff working together to make our campus more sustainable. 🌱

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a shared global framework for creating a more sustainable, inclusive and equitable future. At GTI, we’re taking our own steps towards these goals through education, inclusion, wellbeing, climate action, sustainable communities and partnerships.

Our Green Campus journey is part of the Green-Campus Programme, operated in Ireland by An Taisce.

GTI was delighted to welcome Maria Félix Cilleros Boza, Director & Internationalisation Coordinator, and Maria del Pino Ojeda León, a member of the Internationalisation Team at Escuela Oficial de Idiomas Los Cristianos, as part of their Erasmus+ preparatory visit. 🇪🇸 🇮🇪

Over two days, they worked with John McLoughlin, Deputy Principal to finalise plans for their two students who will complete a month long Erasmus+ placement at GTI.

We’re delighted to support this exciting Erasmus+ partnership and look forward to welcoming their students to GTI! 🤝🇪🇺

Our Fashion Buying, Styling & Visual Merchandising students headed into Galway City this week for a hands-on retail research activity, exploring how different retailers create their identity and connect with their customers. 👗

Working in groups, students visited retailers — Brown Thomas, Les Jumelles, kindf_olk, Planet Retro Vintage and Fresh Cuts Clothing — researching everything from target customers and price points to the brands, products and overall retail experience.

A fantastic opportunity to put theory into practice while gaining a deeper understanding of how retailers position themselves within the fashion market. ✨

With the sunshine making a welcome return, our Level 5 Art & Design students took their creativity outdoors! ☀️

Students put their observational drawing skills into practice, with a particular focus on construction line, as well as experimenting with line, proportion, space and mark-making. 🎨

This practical outdoor learning helps students develop their visual awareness, understanding of form and accuracy in drawing, while building strong foundations for creative practice. ✏️

Many thanks to Cat from M·A·C Cosmetics and Ellie from Charlotte Tilbury Beauty for welcoming our GTI Beauty Therapy students to Brown Thomas Galway as part of their Retail Selling module.

Students gained valuable insights into customer service, product presentation and application techniques, with Cat sharing the MAC service model and Ellie offering practical retail advice. It was also fantastic to hear from Ellie, a GTI graduate, and learn from her experience in the industry. 👏
