A total solar eclipse crosses Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain tomorrow evening. It is the first total eclipse over mainland Europe since 1999. Ireland lies outside the path of totality, so we see a deep partial eclipse instead. The Moon covers roughly 96% of the Sun’s disc at maximum from Athenry.

Where to look
Look west to west-northwest. The Sun sits about 16° above the horizon at maximum, so you need a clear, unobstructed view in that direction. Check your chosen spot at the same time the evening before, so you know it will not be blocked by trees, buildings or hills.

Safety rules
• Certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses must be worn the entire time. This is a partial eclipse, so there is no safe moment to look with the naked eye.
• Never use ordinary sunglasses, camera viewfinders or phone screens as protection.
• An indirect method works too: a pinhole projector lets you view a safe image of the Sun on card.
• Cloud cover is the real risk this year, roughly a 40% chance of cloud in Galway, so have a backup viewing spot in mind.

Physics talking point
Why does totality only happen along a narrow path, while a partial eclipse is visible across a much wider region? Think about the geometry of the umbra and penumbra, and how the Sun, Moon and Earth line up.

Bhí lá den scoth againn ag lá na ngradam le déanaí ar scoil. Tugann an lá seo seans dúinn aitheantas a thabhairt dóibh siúd a rinne thar barr, ní amháin sa seomra ranga ach ar an bpáirc, sna cúirteanna agus go leor áiteanna eile. Maith sibh go léir 🎉👏
We had great celebrations at our Senior Awards Day where we recognised our students achievements both in and out of the classroom. Well done one and all. Thanks to our local Credit Union for their support. Maith sibh 🎊🥇
