Ireland’s Culture and Landscape | National Heritage Week 15th – 23rd August 2026 11/08/2026

As part of National Heritage Week 2026, ATU Galway City, Dublin Road campus will host the event Ireland’s Culture and Landscape on Tuesday, 18 August.

The free event will feature a series of engaging talks exploring Ireland’s rich cultural, historical and natural heritage, traditions and folklore.

Topics will include the legendary route of the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the ancient native woodlands of Lough Corrib, folk memories of landlord oppression and resistance in Galway and Clare, and the survival of a traditional Donegal-Fermanagh song repertoire across more than two centuries.

🍀 Best of luck to the Galway senior camogie team as they take on Cork in this weekend's All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Final.

A special mention to our Galway campus students Shannon Corcoran and Ava Lynskey, alumni Sarah Healy, AnnMarie Starr, Ewan Cunningham and Adrian Pilkington, and Sligo campus alumnus John Connor, who is part of the Galway senior management team.

🏉ATU student and Sports Scholar Ailish Quinn has been named co-captain of the Connacht Women's Rugby team for the 2026 Interprovincial Championship.

A Sport and Exercise Science student at our Galway City campus, she will lead the side into this year's Interpros alongside her fellow co-captain.

💚Congratulations on this fantastic achievement, and best of luck to the Connacht Women's team in the upcoming championship!

The 2026 Aleen Cust Symposium, held last week on the Mountbellew Campus, celebrated the life and legacy of Aleen Cust, the first female veterinary surgeon in Britain and Ireland.

Opened by President Catherine Connolly, the symposium brought together historians, veterinary professionals, researchers and the local community to explore Cust's pioneering contribution to veterinary medicine, agriculture and women's history.
