Senior Rugby League Begins 🏉

Our Senior Rugby squad travelled to Loughrea RFC today to take on St Brigid’s, coming away with a well-earned 33–17 bonus-point victory.

We got off to a strong start, with scrum-half Lee Lydon (5B) crossing for our opening try after a dominant scrum from Bim Donovan (LCA), Conor Neilan (6C) and Dumitru Beoru (6A). Alex Nolan (5B) added the conversion in difficult conditions.

St Brigid’s responded, but Jan Dziedzina (6D) finished brilliantly to score our second try and give us a 12–7 lead at half-time.

The second half began with a superb kick and chase from Lee Lydon, who caught the St Brigid’s full-back and forced a penalty deep in the 22. After sustained pressure, captain Oliver Domgala (6B) crossed for our third try, with Alex Nolan adding the extras.

Nolan then produced a fantastic long-range finish of his own to secure the bonus point.

Our fifth and final try came from Lee Lydon, who raced in from 60 metres, leaving several defenders in his wake. Alex Nolan added the conversion to make it 33–5.

St Brigid’s added two late tries, but the Seniors held on for an impressive 33–17 victory.

A huge well done to all 23 players involved. It was fantastic to see everyone getting valuable minutes in a competitive game and making a contribution to the team.

Next up: Portumna CS in two weeks.

Open Night 2026 ✨

Please note that the date has changed — our Open Night will now take place this Thursday, 1st October, from 7–9pm.

We look forward to welcoming 6th Class students and their parents to our Open Night. Come along, meet our teachers, see our facilities and find out more about life at Merlin College and the subjects we offer.

Applications are available at Open Night. Applications must be returned by 26th October. There are 120 places available.

💙💛SENIOR RUGBY KICKS OFF!💙💛

Our Senior Rugby team began their season on Wednesday with a match against Archbishop McHale College at Galwegians RFC.

Ryan Nolan (6D) opened the scoring, with his brother Alex (5B) adding the extras in the opening minutes. Shortly afterwards, Ryan fed Lee Lydon (5B) from the base of the scrum. After beating several defenders, Lee produced a brilliant offload back to Ryan, who crossed the line for his second try.

Captain Oliver Domgala (6B) then scored an excellent individual try just before half-time.

After the break, Tomiwa Lofinmakin (6A) made an immediate impact, scoring an impressive try with his very first touch. Lee Lydon and Alex Nolan both added superb long-range tries, while Denis Aioanei (5B) capped a fantastic individual performance with a brilliant score.

Ekene Okomah (4C) and Conor Ipati (6B) also crossed the line to complete an outstanding team performance.

It was a fantastic day for the squad, with 26 players gaining valuable game time and 6 players making their debut in schools rugby.

Next up, our Connacht League campaign begins on Tuesday against St. Brigid’s.

Intermediate Camogie 🏒

Hard luck to our intermediate camogie team who were beaten yesterday by Colaiste Chroi Mhuire. Well done to all the girls involved. The girls never gave up and fought hard until the end.

It’s been a ‘souper’ busy week in the Home Economics kitchen! 👩‍🍳🥕🥦

Our 2nd and 3rd Years put their practical cookery skills into action, preparing and cooking their own delicious vegetable soup. A great week of hands-on learning, teamwork and tasty results! 🍲👏
