Roscommon Town is the decarbonisation zone (dz) for Roscommon County Council . The community and climate action team there are doing some amazing work across lots of sustainability projects. In just one example of this, the Galway and Roscommon ETB, in association with the council, have run an innovative self-build Wind Turbine course to help people discover the possibilities of local energy. See our full profile of the Roscommon Town dz here: https://climateconnected.ie/2026/01/21/roscommon-town-decarbonising-zone-dz/

Meath tackling . Meath County Council has designated nine Decarbonising Zones (DZs) across the county, as part of its broader Climate Action Plan. This structure allows the council to take a county-wide, coordinated approach, but one which places particular emphasis on the nine designated DZs, while recognising that each DZ has unique challenges — for example, Bettystown, a coastal town, faces different issues than the inland town of Kells. Climate Connected Web Tool Launched at event in Galway by the 71st Mayor of Galway City, Councillor Mike Hubbard. According to Dr Jean Moore of the National Economic and Social Council, who also spoke at the launch. “Climate Connected is a really excellent example of the kinds of collaborative wide-ranging climate action, activities and projects that are going on at the local level and that really supports the work that we have been doing at NESC on the energy transition, where we see community-led action as a key enabler and lever for transformative change”.

The Presentation Sisters owned a 20 acre bog in Lixnaw. Taking on the costs of rewilding themselves. they've helped it to return to nature. At the same time they made sure to talk to the local people who had access to the bog and keep them on board. Long absent species of bog plants and animals were given a chance to return to what became a wetter bog and therefore a healthier bog. Check out the full story and see how you can follow this amazing example: https://climateconnected.ie/2025/11/06/the-lixnaw-bog-conservation-project/

This community garden in Togher in Cork has made a habitat for nature so that biodiversity has increased in this space so close to the city of Cork. But at the same time it is clear that Mandie, Marie, and everyone else in the project sees how important it is to include as many people and groups. "...It was important to include the kids and teenagers that hung around the park ask them to help out so they felt involved too.” – Mandie. West Kerry Dairy Farmers set up a Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) in 2020 to cut electricity use and carbon emissions in the dairy sector in the area. Led by local farmer Dinny Galvin, supported by a small steering committee they went on to run a collective solar PV meitheal . They combined a collective tender for solar, and farmer-to-farmer learning to get very competitively priced quotes . Credibility was important from the beginning. A trusted, local farming champion (Dinny) kept momentum and converted scepticism into action. The group looked for visible outcomes: rooftop solar is easy to see — it signalled success, encouraged neighbours, and accelerated peer copying. INTERESTED IN YOUR OWN MEITHEAL? There's nothing common about swifts
Swift Conservation Ireland is a volunteer led initiative working on the conservation of the swift in Ireland. The project began with Lynda Huxle's interest in swifts which began while working at ATU Mayo campus in Castlebar. She began recording numbers and studying nest sites on campus in the summer months, and noticed that fewer birds returning each year. Lynda was able to turn her own worries into a far reaching national project of conservation: spreading and sharing knowledge, and making a real impact. Boomtreebees For tiny things, this is a big result.

They provide semi‑natural nesting opportunities for honeybees in the form of log hives which are taken up by the bees. They also conduct research and education to share what they have found out about how to help bring back the Irish honey bee in the wild. So far, they have provided over 600 log hives across Ireland.
