These exercises are called ‘SOVT’ exercises.
SOVT stands for ‘Semi Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises’.
There are many variations. Using straws is just one example.

Other types of SOVT exercises include:
~Lip Trills
~Singing with a hand over the mouth
~Blowing raspberries (tongue between lips) while humming
~Nasal consonants (including M N and NG)
