We see the results of non-identification of language disorders (in primary school) in adults on a daily basis here, so primary school teachers should be provided with the training to identify not just the typical (and sometimes mythical) manifestations dyslexia and dyspraxia but also difficulties with syntax which impede clarity of expression or comprehension. The Carter Report mentioned below is well worth a read.

It is estimated that two children in every class of 30 suffers from language disorders but their difficulties are often mistaken for bad behaviour.

This is Christina Murphy, her last day was today as her contract expired after working with us for 6 years. I, for one, don't know what I am going to do without her, and I think the rest of the staff feel the same. She is, without any exaggeration, the most competent employee I have ever met and worked with. Her work ethic is just simply incredible, as is her discretion and empathy with the disadvantaged people that we try to help. Her loyalty to the staff is unsurpassable as well and as an example of that she offered to come in for free while I am on holidays next week to make sure all the part-time staff get paid. Thank you is not a good enough word for her. We hope we can get her back in some capacity and I hope it is not some Sunday when there is no mass, as my mother used to say. Kieran
