What if you go for an audition, and you read the brief, and they say you can prepare any song from a particular show. And you choose a well-known song from that show to prepare, and work on it with your singing teacher until you feel good about it.
What if then you get to the audition, they ask you what song you’re singing, and so you tell them. They say they’re not doing that song. They don’t have the music for the song you’ve chosen, so the accompanist can’t play it.
What if you tell them that’s okay because you have a recorded accompaniment your singing teacher has made you, the one you’ve been practicing with. They ask you to sing a different song. You tell them you’ve prepared this particular song and you’d like to sing it. (It is definitely from the show.) They say they’ll find you a track, even though you told them you have one. They start playing a track, but it’s for a different song, so you don’t sing. They start shouting at you to sing, to just start. You start singing the song you had prepared, and they start shouting that it’s the wrong song. Which you knew. They then find a track for the actual song you had prepared, and you start singing, but of course it’s different from the one you had practiced with, and you’re rattled anyway, but you do your best. Then while you’re singing, one of the audition panel starts asking what even IS this song, is it even IN the show? (It’s definitely in the show)
What if you are 14 and this audition is happening in front of a room full of your peers?
What if after you sang, other kids got up to sing the song you chose, because it’s definitely in the show, but those kids don’t face any objections.
How would you feel? How would you handle it?
