Congrats to Conall Ó hAiniféin from Gaelcholáiste an Chláir who achieved an incredible 8 A1's in this years leaving cert. I had the pleasure of working with Conall for two years on Applied Maths, which he chose as an extra subject. An absolute gentleman - well deserved Conall. Comhghairdeas arís.

Investigators are now sure that the copilot was to blame for the tragic Germanwings air disaster this week. How are they so sure so soon? The concepts involved are all covered in the Leaving Cert Project Maths course. Basically, the argument goes something like this: Say the chances of a mechanical fault causing the cockpit door to lock from the inside are 1 in a million. The chances of a mechanical fault causing the plane to descend rapidly are also 1 in a million. Both are independent events. To calculate the probability of the first mechanical fault AND the second happening at the same time you multiply the probabilities together. The answer is 1/1000000000000 or 1 in a trillion. This is such a remote possibility that it is 'beyond reasonable doubt' that the copilot set both events in train himself to cause this terrible tragedy. Watch the technical analysis of David Gleave, Aviation Safety Researcher about 5:50 mins into last Thursday's episode of Primetime
