As we wrap up 2025, I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to every student I’ve worked with this year.

Massive congratulations to everyone who passed and earned their independence on the road — there’s been loads of you 👏 Some people prefer to keep it private and not post online, but I’m proud of every single one of you.

This year I made the decision to transition from manual to automatic, and it’s been a great success. Automatic cars (and more driver-assist tech/ADAS) are becoming the new normal, and I’m excited to keep helping learners build safe, confident habits for that future.

My end of year has been a bit rough and I didn’t get to speak to everyone personally, so please know this message is for you too — thank you for your support, your trust, and the hard work you put in.

Here’s to a safe, successful 2026. Maith thú, and see you on the road.

MAITH THÚ, MANTAS! 🎉

Huge congrats to Mantas who PASSED his driving test in Ennis today! 🚗✅

Mantas completed all 12 EDT lessons with DriveX and also did a mock test with us last week. He said the mock test really opened his eyes to the little mistakes, and it gave him the push he needed.

He then spent the weekend going through our notes and watching driving videos to make sure he didn’t repeat those mistakes – and it paid off today with a FIRST-TIME PASS. 🙌

🚦 Important Learner‑Permit Changes – Effective 1 Nov 2026 🚦

Hey future drivers! The Department of Transport is updating the learner‑permit rules. Below is everything you need to know, broken into two easy‑to‑follow stages.

🔹 Phase 1 – The Initial Learning Period

What it covers Details
Duration Up to 7 years or a maximum of four learner permits (each can be held for ≤ 2 years).

*Medical exemption* ✅ You can use a medical exemption once, on your first learner‑permit application only.
Reduced‑programme grants (e.g., RED EDT, foreign‑licence concessions) ✅ Available only for the first permit. After that you’ll follow the standard training path.
*Third / Fourth permit rule* You must have taken a driving test in that vehicle class within the past 2 years to obtain a 3rd or 4th permit.
*Fourth‑permit length* Valid for just 1 year. Plan your test early!

🔹 Phase 2 – The Restart (When You Apply for a 5th Permit)
If you reach the end of Phase 1 (four permits or 7 years), any request for a fifth learner permit forces you to restart the whole process:

*Retake the driver‑theory test.
Apply for a brand‑new learner permit (starts a fresh 2‑year clock).
Complete the full 12 Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons with an RSA‑approved instructor.
What you lose at this point:

Medical exemption – No longer available on any subsequent permits.
Reduced‑programme grants / exchange‑licence concessions – If you received a grant (e.g., RED EDT) or a special concession for a foreign licence the first time, you cannot claim it again. You’ll be treated like any other learner driver.

🤔 Why These Changes?
The goal is to keep learner permits as a stepping stone toward a full licence, not a long‑term workaround. Limiting exemptions and allowing them only once encourages regular testing and consistent training, which makes our roads safer for everyone.
