✨I know, I know… we’re only just looking at Halloween decorations and I’m going to mention Christmas! It’s a time for family but can be a difficult time when a family member has died and leaves a gap around the Christmas table. My ashes memorial jewellery is a poignant and personal way to keeping a loved one close and help bring some comfort at a time when everyone else is celebrating ✨

✨But handmade things take time, particularly when I’m making memorial jewellery. First I’ll have a chat with you about what you are looking for. Then we’ll have a chat about who you want to remember, this part is very important to me. Before I start making I’ll light a candle and sit for a minute with the ashes. I say a little hello to the person who has passed, tell them what I am making and for whom and ask them to help me. I’ll have also found out about the music they liked and create a little playlist to listen to while I work. ✨

Sitting pretty 😍

It was my Mam and Dads 50th wedding anniversary a couple of years ago. There they are on the left still holding hands 🤝

On the right, floating in the breeze, are my grandparents. Their ashes sprinkled in silver and mounted on ancient bog oak ✨

From a distance it looks like an ordinary piece of polished silver, but as you get closer you realise it’s not quite as it seems.
This piece contains a tiny amount of ashes, subtly changing the surface, giving a tangible presence after intangible loss 🥲

Last home visits for 2026!! Ideal for new parents, I know how difficult is try and leave the house with a new baby. So I’m coming to you in early October 🤗 contact me for details and booking. You can also see me for baby and doggo casting at the Marina Market, I’m there one weekend a month. In September it will be Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th from 10.30-5 each day. You can also come and talk to me about personalised jewellery commissions, fingerprint and ashes memorial jewellery 🥲

The cast on the left was one of the very first customer bellies I cast using bandage plaster… 13 years ago! 😅
Since then I’ve improved techniques and learned some brand new ones. The picture on the right is a full belly cast using jesmonite and fibreglass. Making it incredibly strong and also incredibly detailed 😍

They really do grow so fast 😍

Just a few short weeks separate these two little ones who visited me at the studio recently ✨

Documenting how small your little baby was, these are beautiful keepsakes remembering a most precious time 😍

Each little cast takes about a minute (yes, that is correct!!) using totally skin safe moulding material. Once the mould is made I cast in plaster, leave to cure for a bit and then finish to your specifications. After about 4 weeks it’s ready to collect and hang on the wall forever ✨

I work from home (just north of Dunmanway) Thursday to Sunday by appointment, one weekend a month I’m at the Marina Market in Cork no appointment needed and about three times a year I’m out doing home visits across west Cork (next time is October) 😍

Most of the work I do here at the studio is about family… but not all 😅 There was that time when I was asked to make a mould of an actor for a very specific part. The play was The Lieutenant of Inismore by Martin Mc Donagh, very dark and very funny! One of the characters gets shot in the second half and the body remains on stage for the whole second half…. Queue West Cork Casting Studio 🙌

Myself and my buddy .art went down to Rossmore one Sunday to make the mould with a very obliging actor. It was certainly an acting lesson for all of us… the mould took slightly longer to go off than it said on the tin and there was an element of minor panic with myself and Kay… not that you would have known it… we looked calm and collected on the surface 😅🙈

Weeks later we were invited to go and see it, it’s an excellent play! And the bust we created played an Oscar winning role because towards the end of the play I overheard someone behind me whisper to her companion “that actor has been on stage an awful long time” ⭐️

Just over 10 years ago I was on a career break from my 9-5 adult guidance job. Since taking the break we moved to west Cork and had a second baby…. The prospect of going to back to the office was not attractive to me and then….😅

Then I saw a Facebook post showing a family of four (just like mine) having their hands cast together. A that was it, I had to know how to do it and so spent the next year or so practicing at home. One of my first pieces was my own family ✨

The girls were maybe 3 and 6 and I loved the idea of them growing up and looking at their little hands 👋🏻 and now we have one (hopefully) heading off to college in September all growed up! I’m so glad I was able to capture them when they were so small 🥰

Maybe your family is getting older, thinking about college and jobs, thinking about branching off and leaving the family home 🏠 A family circle lifecast is a wonderful show of togetherness and the strength of family unity. A creative way of keeping the whole family together forever 🤗

By the way!! I had initially mounted our family cast on a round board, bad move… it rolled onto the floor and smashed to pieces 😩 luckily I was able to put it back together, tidy up the cracks and remould and cast a new piece! See today’s stories for some of that 🙌
