Earlier this summer two Computing Camps took place in PJ Carroll’s Building in DkIT, welcoming 80 young people aged 12 to 17 across two three-day programmes. Each camp hosted 40 attendees and provided an engaging introduction to digital skills.

During the first week, participants explored Scratch, Programming and Web Development, while the second focused on Scratch, Games Development and Animation. After sampling all three areas, students chose their preferred topic and took part in an advanced workshop tailored to their interests.

On the final day, students put their new skills into practice by developing projects individually or in small teams. The camps concluded with a showcase event, where participants proudly presented their work to peers and families.

The camps were coordinated by Niall Dowd from the Department of Visual & Human-Centred Computing, with their success largely due to student tutors Ben McKeever, Kaylon Riordan, Reine Carolan and Jake O’Reilly. The tutors created and delivered content throughout the programmes and excelled at engaging, encouraging and supporting students, helping ensure a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone.

DkIT have a number of courses with Available Places that are open for students to apply to through CAO.

We have limited additional places in areas such as Health and Physical Activity, Business Studies, Cybersecurity, Event Management, Bioscience, Nutrition and more.

There are many reasons for applying through Available Places. Some students may have changed their mind on their selected course or wish to remain closer to home while they pursue their higher education options.
Others may have just missed out on required points, and they now need to consider other pathways or alternatives. Some students haven’t yet submitted an application, so are exploring their options through Available Places.

Best of luck to everyone receiving their CAO offers today. Access will be available to the CAO Student Portal from 2PM. Students have until 3PM on 1st September to accept their Round One offers.

With the Leaving Certificate results recently released, many students will be happy with their results and ready to take the next step in their life’s adventure.

However, since sitting their exams some students may have changed their mind on their selected course or wish to remain closer to home while they pursue their higher education options. Others may have just missed out on required grades, and they now need to consider other pathways or alternatives.

Even if students didn’t submit a CAO application, they can still look at Available Places in DkIT, which offers a wide variety of degrees with places for study commencing in September 2026. There will be additional places available in degree areas such as Business, Computing, Science, Hospitality and Sport.

CAO will make offers to students who have already applied to CAO on Wednesday 26th August, with the Available Place facility opening at 12pm on Thursday 27th August 2026.

After a lifetime dedicated to traditional music, Noreen McManus decided it was finally time to pursue something she had always wanted — a college degree.

A well-known figure in the Louth music scene, Noreen has spent decades teaching and promoting traditional music across the Northeast, including through the Oriel Traditional Orchestra and Comhaltas. Having finished her Leaving Cert at 17 and gone straight into work, third-level education was something she never had the opportunity to pursue.

Now, with her children grown, Noreen is studying the BA in Music and Performance Technologies at DkIT.

Despite initial nerves around technology, she has embraced new skills, from classical studies and digital notation to exploring different genres and performance opportunities. Her extensive musical knowledge and teaching experience have also proved invaluable throughout the course.

For Noreen, returning to education has been hugely rewarding — and she has a simple message for anyone considering taking the leap:
“Don’t be afraid. I had that moment of oh my God, can I really do this? … But yes — you can absolutely do it. People are so supportive… So, take the step. Go for it.”

Aoife Curran is on a pathway to a career in Intellectual Disability Nursing. The student from Drogheda has just completed a year studying at O’Fiaich Institute of Further Education and Training (FET) and is preparing to begin the BSc (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing at DkIT this September.

“I grew up with a younger sibling with special needs and always knew I wanted to work in a caring role” Aoife explains.

However, when she finished school and started applying for the CAO, she wasn’t sure exactly what she wanted to do. She began a psychology degree in Maynooth and soon realised it wasn’t the right fit for her and knew in her gut that healthcare was a better choice.

Not having a science subject at Leaving Cert level was an obstacle for Aoife. Having taken time to carefully consider the best route for her, it was late in the summer when she reached out to O’Fiaich Institute to get advice, and discovered the Tertiary Pathway into Intellectual Disability Nursing:

The Tertiary Access Programme offers a unique route into the BSc (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing. Students begin their studies locally in Cavan, Monaghan, or the Louth–Meath region and progress to DkIT after successfully completing a QQI accredited Level 5 Nursing Studies year.

Aoife’s year in O’Fiaich gave her a solid foundation in care practices and she found learning in smaller numbers really beneficial.

“Further Education gives you the chance to work one on one with a teacher, you get a taste of college life and you can properly immerse yourself in the course without being in a large lecture hall.”

The Tertiary Degree experience is one Aoife would recommend to anyone considering this pathway.

“There are so many people with different stories as to how they ended up here, it really prepares you for college with so much guidance and support.”

One last reminder about the additional Maths Entry Examination to allow applicants to pass the Additional Maths Entry Requirements for a range of Level 8 degrees. Those who wish to participate in this exam are advised to attend the Short Preparation Course from 25-26th August 2026, before the exam on Friday 28th August 2026.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process whereby evidence of learning (formal, non-formal or informal) that has taken place prior to enrolment in higher education is recognised and given value. A key principle of RPL is that learners shouldn’t have to relearn what they already know.

For Susann Sullivan from Drogheda, RPL was the key to overcoming a significant career barrier. In 2021, Susann launched her own business, The Pantryist, taking it from the idea stage to nationwide distribution within its first year. The company offered a range of calorie-friendly treats, originally created by Susann for herself as a guilt-free snack, which quickly gained nationwide attention. When her company closed after scaling faster than she could manage, Susann found that despite her vast experience across many aspects of her business and having previous qualifications, not having a Business specific Degree was a huge obstacle when applying for new roles.

"When I started applying for roles that I felt were a perfect fit, I found that many required a minimum of a business degree or a degree in a related discipline, which meant I couldn’t progress to the interview stage to show my relevant experience,” Susann recalled."

When she began her search for a Business Degree, she came across the Recognised Prior Learning Process and thought it sounded like an ideal path to her degree. Unlike in her interview search, her experience and skills were invaluable when applying to study at DkIT through the RPL process.

"My past experience was recognised academically, which meant that I could apply my lived experience and my professional experience against the module objectives of the course to fast track in to year three of the four-year programme,” said Susann.

Although further exemptions might have been possible for particular modules, Susann chose to engage fully with the course. “There was so much to take away from it,” she says. And the benefits came quickly: just eight weeks into the programme, she secured a new role as a Business Development Manager.
