Dundalk St Gerard’s AC is inviting the entire Dundalk and Louth community - especially all our fellow local athletics clubs, to join us tonight as we welcome home Kate O'Connor! 🏃‍♀️💨

Let’s gather together to give Kate the incredible homecoming celebration that is so well deserved!

Words can't do justice as to how we are all feeling this evening, how proud we are! A huge congratulations to Kate, Michael and Valerie. What a wonderful ambassador for our school, community and country. You have only gone and done it again! Bring on the next challenge, you are amazing!! 💙💛💙

💫Best of Luck Kate💫
We would like to wish our past pupil Kate the very best of luck as she represents Ireland at the European Championships over the next couple of days. We are incredibly proud to see one of our former pupils competing at such a high level and wish her every success. A special mention to Kate's dad and coach, our current teacher Mr Michael O'Connor, who will be also cheering her on every step of the way! We'll all be following her progress and supporting her from home. Go on, Kate, we're all behind you! 💙💛💙

Kate O'Connor admits it was a "little bit of a whirlwind" after claiming gold at the Commonwealth Games.

The Newry-born athlete proved her class to clinch the heptathlon title in devastating fashion.

“I spent so much time last year finishing second and finishing third that it’s nice to finally get that gold medal," she said.

“I had the privilege to stand on the line before the 800 knowing I was in a pretty good position, I could let the girls go off and tussle for that bronze medal but then I found myself in striking distance with 60 or 70 metres to go and I thought, ‘well, why not win it as well as win it overall?’

“I kicked for home and just that feeling of crossing the line and knowing that I’d done everything that I needed to do.

“My mum was crying up in the stands there, she was delighted for me as well as my dad, and my boyfriend’s here. I have so many family and friends here as well, it’s just across the water, which is absolutely amazing.

“I’m delighted to get the gold medal.”
