Rewooding Ireland: lessons from Scotland

While Ireland and Scotland have a shared history of deforestation, efforts to restore naturally wooded landscapes are more advanced in parts of Scotland. James Rainey, Senior Ecologist at Trees for Life, a rewilding charity based in the Scottish Highlands, will discuss some of the lessons learned, and how these could inform efforts to restore woodland landscapes in Ireland

I'm over at Pearse College Horticulture mostly So come on and check out what me and my students are up to....

Bobby is the 9 year old boy in the video , Bobby with a little help from his dad Clifford reared and trained the Kestrel who had his first public appearance at Coolard National School on Wednesday .
Bobby and his younger brother Danny were introduced to falconry by their dad during lock down , while most children their age were looking at screens Bobby and Danny were learning the ancient craft of falconry and they reared and trained a Tawny Owl and his next venture was a Male Kestrel that he named Kes and trained to fly free , but as Kes matured he started to foot Bobby ( grab with his talons , this is how Kestrels catch their food but not very pleasant especially for a 9 year old and his younger brother ) after all his hard work and dedication Bobby selflessly asked cg if we could take Kes ,
Clifford met us in Limerick and we brought Kes home , he was in absolutely beautiful condition , Rosie spent a lot of time with Kes , we decided to change his name to Murphy which would play a huge part in getting him out of bad habits, if you believe that please let me know and ill put my name in for the next election . We changed his name to Murphy because we couldn’t remember his name , Kes probably associated Bobby with food and might even see Bobby as competition but a new environment and handlers can play a big part on kicking the habit , we handled Murphy without food and put food into his aviary without him seeing us .
His first public appearance was in Coolard School and the first students he met were brilliant , Rosie explained to them that it was Murphy first day and a bad experience could put him off for life , Murphy was fantastic and he is going to be a great ambassador for his endangered Wild cousins .
Thanks very much Bobby for the fantastic work you did with Kes and for trusting us to take care of him . We promise to take good care of him and with his help try to educate people of the hazards Kestrels face and hopefully when you grow up they will be as plentiful as they were when I was a kid . 16/02/2024

Awesome to see young people learn from others about just how important wildlide and birdlife are

Catherine Drea: Let’s not give up hope 13/01/2024

"Let’s not make short term resolutions but live in hope that we can make the world a better place before we hand it on"

Catherine Drea: Let’s not give up hope As I See It: Catherine Drea’s fortnightly column as published in the Waterford News & Star Do you still make a New year Resolution? I used to but the whole effort is riddled with failure from the minute you pronounce a new diet or fitness regime. Perfection can be the enemy of the good,
