The countdown to World Down Syndrome Day is on! 🗓️
Why the 21st day of the 3rd month? Because Down syndrome is caused by the triplication (3 copies) of the 21st chromosome. This year, we are standing . Did you know that 39% of people with intellectual disabilities often feel lonely? We are wearing to get people talking! Choose your brightest and boldest socks to show your support.

We have been reading one of our favourite storybooks, The Smeds and The Smoos by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. A story of friendship through adversity, of younger people leading by example, embracing and celebrating the uniqueness of every individual ❤️💙
We have made our own puppet show, using both AIM and Diversity, Inclusion resources. This visual activity really brings the story to life 🥰

A child brought in their own telescope and a compass and said they are real and delicate! They were a surprise from Santa 🫠
This led to an exploration of all things pirate, treasure, maps, etc. Later, another child brought in their Tom Crean book, an Irish explorer.
We had such fun making telescopes, maps of the South Pole and finally working out a letter code to find our own treasure!

Our recent theme, inspired by the beautiful story, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. We made snowmen using cozy socks, rice, jewels and ribbons. A really lovely sensory activity. We also used chalk to create snowmen on blue card, all uniquely different 💙

A little flavour of some Christmas activities we have enjoyed over the past 2 weeks 🎅 🎄

Children love to role-play; it comes naturally to them. As interests evolve, we add relevant resources to our role-play area. Last week, the children opened a hair and make-up salon, as some had gone to the barbers over Halloween. They blended colours, brushed hair, offered tea and books, charged 100 euro at times! So much fun and so much learning: cooperative play, sharing ideas, taking turns, use of fine motor skills, expressing themselves creatively, etc. This coming week, we are opening a maternity hospital as one family has a new baby on the way soon 😀
