The Burren did not disappoint last Sunday when the visited to investigate the surroundings of Lough Bunny under the expert guidance of Nick Stewart.
We were delighted to find a number of stoneworts including Dwarf Stonewort (Nitella tenuissima), Hedgehog Stonewort (Chara aculeolata) and Lesser Bearded Stonewort (Chara aculeolata). Also found were Grass of Parnassus, (Parnassia palustris), Mackay's Horsetail (Equisetum × trachyodon) and Least Bur-reed (Sparganium natans)

Great turnout for our recent National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS) survey day in Loughrey, Cookstown as part of the Botanical Skills Project!

Nine volunteers came together to survey five plots, gaining hands-on field experience, enjoying the community aspect of recording as a team. Highlights included spotting new species not visible during earlier surveys, such as Lords-and-Ladies (Arum maculatum), and even passing a 4,500-year-old Neolithic burial site on the walk to our first plot.

The day highlighted just how crucial good hand-over notes, accurate habitat classification, and precise plot mapping from previous volunteers are for long-term recording success.

Our final event for this summer was a fantastic day spent exploring Cream Point, Co Clare with local ecologist Phoebe O'Brien.
A total of 79 species were recorded on the day with highlights including Adder's Tongue Fern and Sea Spurge. Phoebe shared her insights into the management and classification of the site which includes Lowland hay meadow, Molinia meadow and maritime grassland and we had interesting discussions on management techniques.
Marsh Fritillary nests were evident amongst the Devil's-bit Scabious proving the value of microhabitats.

The had a great outing to Cappoquin, Co Waterford last week under the guidance of aquatics expert Paul Green. Paul demonstrated how to use keys to identify species and we got lots of practice with 34 species found on the day. One of our more unexpected finds were a few eels that came up with the grapnel hook!

Looking to build your botanical survey skills or carry out your second NPMS survey of the season? Join the Botanical Skills Northern Ireland Project for our upcoming practical training events!

Whether you are a complete beginner, a community volunteer, or an existing surveyor, these hands-on workshops will help you identify indicator plants, record habitats, navigate plots using mapping tools, and master the NPMS recording app.

Join us this weekend for two events in Donegal and Sligo led by aquatics expert, Nick Stewart.
On Saturday 22nd at Bunduff Lough, near Mullaghmore, Co Sligo, we'll be looking out for Baltic Stonewort (Chara baltica) and recording any other species we find there.
On Sunday 23rd at Durnesh Lough, Rossnowlagh, Co Donegal, we'll be focusing on Bearded Stoneworts, (Chara canescens).

The enjoyed a fascinating walk through the salt marshes and sand dunes of Tramore at the weekend, led by Julie Larkin. Amongst the many finds were Portland Spurge, Sea Milkwort and both Greater and Lesser Sea-spurrey. Julie demonstrated how one way to tell the Sea-spurreys apart is that the seeds of the Greater Sea-spurrey are surrounded by a 'halo' which is not present in the Lesser Sea-spurrey. Lots of learning in great company! Thanks to for funding this project.
