The Rebellion of 1798 posed the gravest challenge to English Rule in Ireland since the mid-17th century Rebellion of 1641. Influenced by the ideals of the French Revolution, a group of determined individuals, predominantly from the Ruling Class in Ireland and Presbyterian backgrounds in the North, sought to emulate the French model. Figures such as Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Samuel Neilson, William Jackson, Wolfe Tone, Archibald Hamilton Rowan, with John and Henry Shears spearheaded this movement, establishing the Society of United Irishmen.
Scheduled to commence on May 23rd, the rebellion's outset was to be marked by the interception of all Mail Coaches leaving Dublin that day, although only one was halted. This incident served as the signal for rebellion in Kildare, Carlow, Wicklow, and Wexford, with thousands joining the cause in subsequent weeks, followed by Ulster and the Midlands, somewhat later. Over the ensuing six weeks, more than thirty battles were fought, with government forces, better equipped and trained, prevailing in most encounters. While casualties numbered in the thousands on both sides, the government forces sustained considerably fewer losses compared to the rebels.
The finale of the Rebellion happened months later when three French frigates sailed into Killala Bay in north County Mayo. Commanded by General Humbert, the force numbered over 1,000 men. The ships also carried a huge quantity of arms. While the French, augmented by local United Irishmen won facile victories at first they were comprehensively defeated at Ballinamuck. The battle of Ballinamuck was the last military action of 1798.

Bligh of Clifton Lodge Bolton of Bective Abbey: The Landed Gentry & Aristocracy Meath ? Bligh of Clifton Lodge Bolton of Bective Abbey: 1 (Irish Family Names) 24/08/2023

Ivo Bligh the 8th Earl of Darnley, who succeeded his brother Edward (the 7th Earl), is best known as the English cricketer who was responsible for ‘The Ashes’. Apparently the story goes that following an unexpected defeat of the English team by the Australians at the Oval, in 1882, a journalist wit wrote an obituary on ‘the Death of English Cricket’ and that all that was left was “The Ashes” The following year Ivo led a team to Australia to win back the laurels lost at the Oval. While there they stayed with the wealthy Clarke family and during their stay played a fun game against the Clarke Eleven. After the match the fun loving ladies of the Clarke household presented Ivo with an urn holding the ashes of either the ball or the bails used in the match. Ivo’s eleven were very successful in Australia and they returned home as heroes of the hour, bringing with them ‘The Ashes’. The ‘trophy’ was kept in Cobham Hall until 1929 when it was presented to the M.C.C. by Ivo’s widow.
Prior to his death in 1817 William Bligh of Mutiny on the Bounty fame made a will in which he named his relative, John Bligh, the Earl of Darnley, as one of his two executors.

Alcock of Wilton, Co. Wexford & Annesley of Camolin, Co. Wexford (Irish Family Names) 02/08/2023

Who were the Alcocks and where did they come from? How did they come to possess the magnificent estate of nearly 6000 Irish acres?

Hilary Murphy, writing about the Butlers of Kayer, also known as Cloughnagieragh and latterly as Wilton, noted that the estate was acquired from Foulks Denn in 1556 by Richard Butler of Mountgarret, 2nd son of the 8th Earl of Ormond. Richard's son Pierce was settled on the lands of Kayer which comprised all the land from Davidstown and Edermine to Glynn. Pierce also took possession of Moneyhore near Enniscorthy. These lands were confiscated from his grandson, also called Pierce in 1654 and were granted to the Thornhill family. In 1695 William Alcock gained possession of the estates and his descendants remained in possession until 1922.

Agar of Kilkenny (The Gentry & Aristocracy of Kilkenny) 02/08/2023

The Agar/Flood Duel

They met in the afternoon of the 25th August. Rothe acted as Agar’s second and Gervase Parker Bushe acted for Flood. Bushe measured the twelve paces and both men took their stance. When the order was given to fire Agar shot first but missed his target. Flood had delayed his shot as he was in the act of taking a pinch of s***f. Agar took his second pistol and then shouted at Flood to fire. The shot was fatal, and Agar fell mortally wounded. It was said that Flood was distraught when he stood over the dying man. He then rode off to get medical assistance, but Agar died a short time later.
