“Research shows just 30 minutes of skin to skin with dad on the first day of a newborn actually rewires dad’s brain. Stimulating many hormones especially Dopmine and Oxytocin so dads get connected to their babies and want to nurture them.” YES. Dads, get those cuddles in! ❤️

Something to consider!

BREASTFEEDING FACT 💦

It is best to let your baby finish feeding on the first breast before offering the second breast and not switching sides while your baby is actively breastfeeding and swallowing, based on the clock.

Your breast only makes ONE TYPE OF MILK (and it's ALL good!) The more frequently you breastfeed, and the emptier the breasts become; the higher the fat concentration in all the breast milk.

The amount of fat that is released into the milk gradually increases as the breast is emptied. As the breast fills between feedings, the fat globules in your breast milk will stick to the walls of the alveoli (the little sacs in your breast where the milk is made).

When your breast is full or it's been a long stretch since the last feeding, the milk at the beginning of the feeding will be more watery and lower in fat as the fat globules are stuck further back. This is called Foremilk and is perfect as it helps to hydrate your baby, while also providing all of the other amazing components and nutrients of your breast milk.

As your baby continues to feed, fat globules are gradually dislodged and expressed out with your milk making it creamier and higher in fat and calories. This is referred to as Hindmilk.

Foremilk simply refers to the milk at the beginning of the feeding, while Hindmilk refers to the milk towards the end and may explain why you notice a difference in color and consistency.

There is a gradual increase in fat content that is different with every feeding, and more distinct when your breasts are very full, such as during the first few weeks after birth or if you have waited too long between feedings. This may be something to consider if your baby is not adequately gaining weight.

Switching sides too soon, according to a clock, or while your baby is actively feeding may decrease the amount of fat they are receiving at that feeding depending on how full your breasts are. This can impact weight gain and could even make your baby more gassy, as the high amounts of lactose in your breast milk are harder to digest without the fat.

This is NOT something that you need to be concerned or worried about when you are nursing or pumping, unless you are having any of the issues I mentioned above. If your baby is gaining weight well and does not have excessive gassiness, there is nothing you need to do differently!

The image below is provided to demonstrate a difference in color at the beginning and the end of a feeding when the breast is very full. What is actually happening in your breast when you feed is a gradual transition, not a sharp change that occurs at some point in time. The milk will gradually increase in fat as you continue to express and ALL of it is good!

Ultimately, it is the total amount of milk your baby takes in a 24 hour period that is most important, since the milk is changing from feeding to feeding. xoxo
