Frontline construction workers see things that others might miss. You're the ones working with the equipment, dealing with changing site conditions and finding practical solutions when the job doesn't go exactly to plan.

You know where the challenges are because you're facing them every day.
That's why your input matters.

Your experience can help make a real difference to site safety:
- Speak up. If something doesn't look right, raise the concern before someone gets hurt.
- Share what you know. A lesson learned on one job could help prevent an incident on another.
- Question the plan. If the conditions have changed or the controls aren't working, make sure the issue is addressed.
- Look out for your team. A quick conversation or a timely warning could prevent someone getting injured.
- Get involved. Your experience and ideas should be part of toolbox talks, risk assessments and decisions about how work is carried out.

Safety isn't just something that's handed down from management. It depends on the people doing the work being heard, respected and supported to speak up.

And if you're a supervisor or foreman, make time to listen. The person carrying out the task may be the first to spot a problem.

You're not just working on the site. You're helping shape how safely it operates.

Struggling but haven't told anybody? You don't have to face it alone.

As part of the CIF Construction Safety Campaign 2026, Sarah Bolton shares an important message about reaching out for support and knowing where to turn when things get difficult.

“Sarah, if someone watching this is struggling right now but hasn't told anybody, what would you want them to hear?”

The HSA specifically warns that trench supports or other protective measures may be necessary in excavations less than 1.25 metres deep, particularly where ground conditions are poor or workers need to lie or crouch inside the trench.

The important distinction is that excavation safety cannot be determined by depth alone.

Ground conditions, water, nearby loads, the position of plant and the work being carried out all affect the risk.

Before anyone enters an excavation, consider these four factors:
▪ Ground stability: Could the sides collapse? Suitable sloping, shoring or other protective measures may be required.
▪ Nearby plant and materials: Vehicles, machinery and spoil heaps close to the edge can add loads that increase the risk of collapse.
▪ Underground services: Have service plans been reviewed, services located and the ground marked before digging begins?
▪ Access and escape: Can workers get out quickly and safely if conditions deteriorate?

There is another important requirement: the HSA states that excavations must be inspected by a competent person at least daily when people are working in them, with additional inspections required in specified circumstances, including after events that may affect stability.

These are not details to leave until a problem develops. They are essential considerations when planning and managing excavation work.

At Ayrton Group, we support a proactive approach to EHS risk management, identifying hazards, assessing site-specific conditions and putting effective controls in place before work begins.

The right question is not just “How deep is it?” It is “What could go wrong, and what is preventing it?”

A reversing alarm sounds. Does that mean the area is safe? No.

Between 2016 and 2025, 25 people lost their lives in construction related incidents involving plant, machinery or vehicles across the island of Ireland.

The figure was published by the HSA in September 2026 as part of its all island construction safety campaign.

One important lesson: warning systems are not a substitute for separating people from moving machinery.

An alarm may alert someone to a reversing vehicle, but it does not physically prevent a collision. Noise, restricted visibility, site congestion and competing activities can all complicate the situation.

What does effective control look like?

▪ Eliminate unnecessary reversing. Use one-way systems and adequate turning areas where practicable.
▪ Separate people and vehicles. Plan pedestrian routes and plant operating areas to minimise interaction.
▪ Control unavoidable reversing. Ensure the danger area is clear and that the driver has adequate visibility or effective assistance.
▪ Check safety systems. If a reversing aid relied upon for safe operation is defective, the vehicle should not be used.
▪ Review the layout as work progresses. A traffic management plan must reflect the changing reality of the site.

These are practical measures drawn from HSA workplace transport guidance.

At Ayrton Group, we believe effective risk management starts with designing hazards out wherever reasonably practicable, rather than relying on workers to react to danger at the last moment.

The safest reversing manoeuvre is often the one the site layout makes unnecessary.

12/10/2026

68 construction workers lost their lives in falls from height across the island of Ireland between 2016 and 2025.

That is the 10 year figure reported by the HSA and its Northern Ireland counterpart, the HSENI, in February 2026.

It is a sobering reminder that one of construction's most familiar hazards remains one of its most serious.

Working at height is not limited to major structural projects or high-rise buildings. It can include roof work, scaffolding, temporary platforms and tasks carried out at much lower levels.

The important question is not simply how high someone is working. It is whether a fall could occur - and what is being done to prevent it.
Three questions worth asking before work begins:
▪ Can the task be completed without working at height?
▪ If not, what collective protection, such as suitable guardrails or working platforms, can prevent a fall?
▪ Have access equipment, the work area and the control measures been checked before the task starts?

Personal protective equipment has a role, but it should not be used as a substitute for effective prevention measures.

At Ayrton Group, we are supporting the CIF Construction Safety Campaign 2026 by bringing greater attention to the critical risks that demand effective planning, proper controls and consistent supervision.

Recognising a hazard is important. Preventing exposure to it is what makes the difference.
