Monday Grammar Rules: Although vs Despite vs In Spite Of 📚

Although, despite and in spite of are all used to show contrast between two ideas. ↔️ However, they are used with different structures.

Although 🔵

Use although + subject + verb before a complete clause.

Examples:
• Although it was raining, we went for a walk. ☔
• Although she was tired, she went to work.
• Although it was cold, we went to the beach. 🏖️

Despite 🟠

Use despite + noun or verb + -ing.

Examples:
• Despite the rain, we went for a walk. ☔
• Despite feeling tired, she went to work.
• Despite the traffic, we arrived on time. 🚗

In spite of 🟢

In spite of has the same meaning as despite and is also followed by a noun or verb + -ing.

Examples:
• In spite of the bad weather, they played football. ⚽
• In spite of feeling sick, she went to work.
• In spite of the traffic, we arrived on time.

⚠️ Common mistakes:

❌ Despite it was raining, we went out.
✅ Although it was raining, we went out.

❌ Despite it was raining, we went out.
✅ Despite the rain, we went out.

A story from Student Voice: IH Dublin Junior Summer Centres 2026 ☀️

This summer, our Junior Summer Centres return to two fantastic locations: University College Cork and St. Columba’s College in Dublin.

Through our “Serious Fun” approach, students combine project-based English lessons with activities, excursions and opportunities to connect with people from different backgrounds.

It is more than a summer language programme. It is a chance to build confidence, create friendships and enjoy an unforgettable experience in Ireland.

A story from Student Voice: My Erasmus Experience in Dublin 🍀

The Erasmus+ Interschool Conversation Club brought together students from several Dublin language schools to share their study abroad experiences and reflect on language learning, cultural immersion and personal growth.

Through open discussions and a fun activity on Irish slang, students connected classroom learning with real-life communication while building confidence, independence and intercultural awareness.
