Children who don’t go to School to Support their Families | Liberian Observer 03/05/2017

We are saddened by the challenges faced by Liberian children in accessing education. LEAP strives to expand scholarship opportunities to the most vulnerable population in Liberia and ask for your partnership and support. One scholarship recipients life changes dramatically as he/she is given an opportunity to learn and build an educational foundation as opposed to being a street seller.

During my masters course in India I have volunteered in the Pupil for Pupil Committee (PPC) which was founded by the PD students of my college (NIT Trichy) in 2005. The aim of the student run organisation was to help the poor and needy children get access to educational materials.

I can only imagine how life would’ve been if I had not received primary education.

Education is not just going to school and learning subjects. When we go to school, the most important thing we learn is core human values and discipline. Getting further higher education and university education would be impossible. In today’s world it is impossible to get a decent job without any higher education. Without a decent paying job, I would probably struggle to even fill my stomach at least once everyday.

I believe quality education is not a luxury which only financially sound people can have access to; it is rather a basic human need to be able to get primary education for a better future. It is unfortunate that many children around the world, especially in Africa do not have the means to go to school. Coming from a small village in India, back home I know some unfortunate children in my neighborhood who are not able to go to school for studying. I have done some volunteer work in the past which involved providing unprivileged children with educational materials and also teaching them at the primary level. It gave me an opportunity to witness the enthusiasm and dedication these children have for studying. I cannot imagine how my life would have been without any primary education.
