The Robert Fisk Archive at Trinity College Dublin.

For more than 50 years, renowned war correspondent Robert Fisk documented conflicts around the world through notebooks, photographs, recordings, correspondence and eyewitness accounts.

His widow, Nelofer Pazira-Fisk, reflects on the decision to donate this extraordinary archive to Trinity, ensuring future generations can learn from one of journalism's most important frontline witnesses.

How does the Sun's outer atmosphere reach temperatures of millions of degrees, far hotter than the Sun's visible surface?

To help answer one of solar physics' big questions, Trinity scientists recently took to the skies aboard an Irish Air Corps aircraft to observe the 2026 total solar eclipse from the path of totality over the Atlantic. Trinity led the setup and operation of the E-CorMag solar telescope, capturing rare observations of the Sun's corona during the brief moments when it became visible.

The mission brought together researchers from Trinity College Dublin, DIAS, TU Dublin and Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), supported by the Irish Air Corps and European Space Agency collaborations. Together, they gathered data that could help scientists better understand the magnetic forces that heat and shape the Sun's atmosphere.

As we prepare to (safely) observe the solar eclipse this week, we are reminded of the historical and scientific links between Trinity College Dublin and Dunsink Observatory. Among the observatory's most celebrated figures was Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Trinity alumnus, Professor of Astronomy and Royal Astronomer of Ireland. Hamilton combined a fascination with the heavens and a brilliant mathematical imagination, securing his place as one of the nineteenth century's greatest scientific thinkers.
