Craving things that aren’t food? It might be Pica. Pica is a condition where a person develops a repeated urge to eat or chew things that aren’t normally considered food.

This can include:

• Ice
• Chalk
• Soil or clay
• Paper
• Hair
• Soap
• Paint
• Plaster
• Starch

One of the interesting things about Pica is that sometimes these unusual cravings can be a clue that the body needs a little more attention.

For example, a strong desire to chew ice is particularly associated with iron deficiency, and Pica can sometimes occur alongside deficiencies such as iron or zinc.

It can also be connected with pregnancy, developmental conditions or psychological and behavioural factors. So rather than thinking, “What a strange habit!”, it is worth asking: Why is this craving happening?

From a homeopathic perspective, unusual cravings are also fascinating because what a person craves can form part of their individual symptom picture.

Have you ever come across Pica in practice or family?

These words appear as the motto of Samuel Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine. More than 200 years later, they still feel wonderfully relevant.

Homeopathy asks us to observe, question, stay curious and keep learning - to look beyond the obvious and understand the individual person in front of us. And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things about studying homeopathy.

ACUTE CASE QUIZ
Can you guess the remedy?

An 8-year-old child comes home after a day out where they had a large icy slushie.

Later that evening, a dry, irritating cough begins.

By bedtime the child is feeling much worse.

The cough is accompanied by a burning, irritated feeling in the throat and chest. They are restless, constantly changing position and can't seem to settle.

They feel chilly and want to be wrapped up warmly.

They're asking for drinks frequently, but only taking small sips at a time.

Mum notices something else - the child has become unusually anxious and clingy, wanting her close and asking repeatedly: “Am I going to be okay?”

The symptoms become noticeably worse after midnight.

13th September | Online

The children are back at school… but maybe it’s time for you to learn something new too!

Join us for a friendly, practical One Day Homeopathy Workshop for Beginners, designed for anyone who is curious about homeopathy and would love to feel more confident using a homeopathic kit at home.

You don’t need any previous knowledge - we start right at the beginning!

During the day, you’ll discover:

-What homeopathy is and the basic principles behind it
-How homeopaths choose between different remedies
-How to recognise the little clues that can help differentiate one remedy from another
-Common remedies to know for coughs, colds, fevers and seasonal complaints
-Remedies traditionally considered for tummy upsets, bumps, bruises and minor injuries
-Back-to-school situations such as nervous anticipation, separation worries and emotional upset
-How to start getting to know the remedies in your Homeopathic Home Kit
-When home treatment is appropriate - and when medical assessment is needed

We’ll look at simple examples and everyday acute situations, so you can begin to understand how a homeopath thinks, rather than simply memorising a list of remedies.

And who knows where one day could lead?

Perhaps you simply want to learn something useful for yourself and your family. Perhaps you’ve been curious about homeopathy for years. Or perhaps this workshop will spark an interest you’d like to take much further.

At the Irish School of Homeopathy, there is a place to learn at every stage of your journey - from complete beginner to professional practitioner training.

13th September | Online | Beginners very welcome

Come with your questions, your curiosity and maybe that homeopathic kit that's been sitting in the cupboard waiting for you to finally understand it!

And yes… we love books!

Our students have access to our school library, with a wide collection of homeopathy books and resources to support their learning throughout their studies.

From materia medica and repertories to philosophy, health and some harder-to-find homeopathic texts - there is always something new to discover. Because learning doesn’t finish when the teaching weekend ends..

A little bit about us...

The Irish School of Homeopathy has been teaching homeopathy in Ireland for over 35 years. But we're not a huge college - and we don't want to be...

We love the fact that we know our students. We know their names, their stories, their strengths and sometimes even what's happening at home! Our classes are small, friendly and personal.

Our tutors are experienced practising homeopaths who bring real cases, real experience and plenty of stories into the classroom.

We study together at Griffith College in Dublin, with the option to join classes live online when getting to Dublin isn't possible. And... because we know life doesn't always go according to plan, classes are recorded too.

But there's something else that's difficult to put into a course description...

The community.

Students arrive from different parts of Ireland and World, different careers and completely different stages of life. They come together because they share one thing - a genuine interest in homeopathy. Friendships form. Confidence grows. People support each other. And quite often, students tell us they didn't expect to learn quite so much about themselves along the way.

Some come simply wanting to learn more. Others arrive knowing that they want to become professional homeopaths. Both are welcome!

That's us. Small, experienced, a little different - and very proud of the community we've built🩵

If you’re thinking about joining us this September, we’d love to welcome you and let you experience it for yourself. Only 6 places are now available on our Professional Course for those ready to take the next step towards becoming a professional homeopath.

Could one of them be yours? Contact us.

BACK TO SCHOOL… ARE YOU READY?

School bags, lunchboxes, new routines and busy mornings are back! It can also be a handy time to get to know some of the homeopathic remedies commonly kept in a Homeopathic Home Kit.

A few you might want to learn more about:
-Arnica commonly associated with bumps, bruises and knocks.
-Aconitum traditionally considered for sudden complaints, particularly following fright or shock.
-Arsenicum album often studied in relation to digestive upsets accompanied by restlessness or anxiety.
-Gelsemium traditionally considered when nervous anticipation is a prominent part of the picture. Great for flu also.
-Pulsatilla often studied where there is tearfulness, clinginess and a strong desire for comfort.
-Nux vomica commonly associated with digestive complaints and overindulgence.
-Belladonna traditionally considered for complaints that appear suddenly and intensely, esp fever.
-Rhus toxicodendron commonly studied for strains and stiffness where movement appears to bring some relief.

But having a box of remedies at home is the easy part!

Knowing which one to choose is where the learning begins.

Our One Day Homeopathy Workshop introduces you to the basic principles of homeopathy and teaches you more about commonly used remedies and how homeopaths differentiate between them. https://ish.ie/courses/homeopathy-workshop/
And if you’d like remedies ready at home, our Homeopathic Kits are also available from the school : https://ish.ie/ish-shop/

So while the children are heading back to school, perhaps it’s time for you to learn something new too!

REMEDY SPOTLIGHT: CANTHARIS

Made from: Lytta vesicatoria, commonly known as the Spanish fly, a metallic green blister beetle. Despite its name, Spanish fly is not a fly at all. It is a beetle traditionally known for containing cantharidin, a substance capable of causing intense irritation and blistering.

In homeopathy, Cantharis is prepared from the beetle through the homeopathic preparation process of serial dilution and succussion.

THE CANTHARIS PICTURE

Think:

BURNING • RAWNESS • URGENCY • INTENSITY

Cantharis is perhaps best known for its strong affinity with the urinary tract.

The classic picture can include:

• Intense burning and cutting pains when urinating
• Constant, almost unbearable urging to urinate
• Passing only small amounts despite the strong urge
• Burning before, during and after urination
• Great restlessness from the intensity of the discomfort
• Symptoms that can appear suddenly and strongly

NOT JUST A URINARY REMEDY

Cantharis also has a well known relationship with burning and blistering of the skin.

The sensation is often described as: burning, smarting, raw and extremely sensitive.

This makes its traditional homeopathic picture particularly interesting because the substance from which the remedy originates can itself produce severe irritation and blistering.

EASY WAY TO REMEMBER CANTHARIS

If BURNING is the word the person keeps using, think about Cantharis. Of course, one symptom alone does not determine a homeopathic prescription. The complete symptom picture and individual presentation still matter.

Cantharis = Spanish fly beetle + burning + urinary urgency + rawness + intensity.
