The Sandford and St Philip’s Choral Union will perform the oratorio The Passion of Our Lord According to St Mark, by the Irish composer Charles Wood (1866-1926). Admission free with retiring collection.

David O’Shea PhD MMus BMus FRCO LTCL enjoys a busy musical career as a keyboard-player, conductor, researcher and educator. He began his musical studies with Rodney Baldwin at the North Dublin School of Music, and continued his education at the DIT Conservatory of Music (BMus), University of Cambridge (MMus), and Trinity College, Dublin (PhD). He studied the organ with several teachers, including Douglas Hollick and the late Peter Sweeney, and has attended many masterclasses. He is one of the few Fellows of the Royal College of Organists in Ireland.

David was organist of Clontarf and Scots from 2006 until 2011. Since then, he has been organist of the grouped parishes of Sandford Parish Church, Ranelagh, and St Philip’s, Milltown, where he coordinates a busy musical programme and directs the parish Choral Union. David performs frequently as a soloist and accompanist in many venues around Ireland, and has also given concerts in the UK, mainland Europe and the USA.

David is Education & Outreach Officer with Pipeworks, and has taught in all the third-level music departments in Dublin. He has written and lectured extensively on the topic of organ and choral music in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His book The Choral Foundation of the Chapel Royal, Dublin Castle, 1814–1922 is published by the Boydell Press, and another book, Sandford Church: A History, 1826–2026 will be published this summer.

David is delighted to return to the organ bench in Clontarf and Scots to present a recital of music by his favourite composer, J. S. Bach.
