This breakthrough could revolutionize secure communication and let us integrate quantum communication into current internet infrastructure.

Previously, it was thought impossible to achieve quantum teleportation over busy fiber optic cables due to the interference from classical internet traffic. However, researchers at Northwestern University found a way to navigate this challenge.

They identified a less crowded wavelength of light for the entangled photons and employed special filters to minimize noise from existing internet data. This allowed them to successfully teleport quantum information across a 30-kilometer fiber optic cable, even with simultaneous high-speed internet traffic. Quantum teleportation leverages the principle of entanglement, where two particles are linked regardless of the distance between them.

This allows for the secure and instantaneous transfer of information without the physical movement of the particles themselves. In this process, information is encoded onto a photon, and through a series of measurements involving entangled photons, this information is transferred to a distant photon without the need for direct transmission. Future research aims to extend these experiments over longer distances, explore more complex entanglement protocols, and test the technology on real-world underground cables.
