Our Mt Venus Publication SLOW | CREATION | OUIET | ROOTS | LISTENING is a philosophical reflection on how, why, and where we garden. A subtle and transcendental Book, provoking us to think deeper, to reflect and be full of anticipation.

Bloom in the Park 2025
Tomorrow is the opening day of Bloom 2025 in the Phoenix Park, and Mount Venus Nursery will be represented by our show garden, "Nature's Symphony: Celebrating Organic Growth", sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Food, Marine.
The garden seeks to reconnect Ireland's growers, both private gardeners, but particularly Irish horticulture and agriculture with our past, and with the land. To think about our relationship with the soil and how and why we grow. In our current economic model, growth is industrial, monetary, taking and taking from the natural world as if its resources are infinite. Those of us who garden are especially aware – or should be – of the toll we are taking on our planet through careless industrial extraction. From chemicals, to run off, our need for convenience has trumped the ecology that underpins the food we eat and air we breathe.
The garden features a simple organic plot which could be a private allotment, but could equally be a productive garden you might have seen hundreds of years ago. Lazy beds of potatoes and broad beans, barley, and fruit trees, mulched in seaweed radiate our from the central structure.
The garden also pays homage to Bloom patron, President Michael D. Higgins, his proud legacy of supporting sustainability, and his Galway roots. The centrepiece of the garden is a simple stage, with tiered lattice seating supporting red ho**er sails. Throughout the event Galway theatre troop, Macnas will be performing alongside the mighty Con Mór sculpture watching over the site. Con is the protector of birds and the earth and holds tight to the our roots in a way we hope everyone else might embrace.
We look forward to seeing you over the Bloom weekend, and hope you might feel more connected with the earth afterwards.

Edible ornamentals
We are primarily a grower of ornamental perennial plants and so are not much use to gardeners who come to us looking for “produce”, plants to grow to eat. But just because a plant isn’t a traditional culinary staple like rhubarb or root vegetables, doesn’t mean that you can’t necessarily eat them. Indeed some quite unlikely ornamental plants and, indeed many typical garden “weeds” are great for eating. As ever, start with small quantities.
