West Pier Art Studio

West Pier Art Studio Dubliner Alan McLeod creates, displays and sells his fabulous creations at the End of the West Pier in Howth. Situated just under Aqua Restaurant.

In 2008 McLeod came to Howth Harbour and set the West Pier Art Studio at the end West Pier. His aim was to explore the marine history, geography and community of the Howth Peninsula which fascinated him from his regular childhood visits to the peninsula. During this time McLeod has had the unique insight of experiencing modern harbour life as the studio is situated at the end of West Pier. He bega

n to visually document daily life on the Harbour and surrounding peninsula. This website previews his Limited Edition Prints and Triptychs. In the subsequent years McLeod befriended the local Crab / lobster boat men and they shared with him their knowledge, heritage and traditions of working at sea! McLeod noted that this knowledge was aural and passed down father to son and so on! Curiously the current generation's sons have no interest in the business and will not be following their fathers into “crabbing or potting". The men are lamenting that the traditional way of fishing and working the sea is dying out! This provided McLeod with the onus to start recording by means of video, audio and painting, their traditions, customs, beliefs and heritage.
