🏮 Happy Chinese New Year 🏮
Some of our amazing students helped us to organise this Lunar New Year event!
We learnt to write our names in Chinese and Korean, made some paper latterns, and tried some traditional Chinese snacks. 🧧🌔🐲
Have an idea for an event? We would love to hear from you too ❤️
Here are some things you might not know about CNY.
1. Chinese New Year (also called the Spring Festival) follows the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, so its date changes each year and falls between 21 January and 20 February.
2. The celebration lasts 15 days and ends with the Lantern Festival, when lantern displays and night parades traditionally take place.
3. Each year is linked to one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac cycle (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig), a system recorded in historical Chinese calendrical traditions.
4. Families travel home for reunion dinners on New Year’s Eve, creating the world’s largest annual human migration period, often called “Chunyun” in China.
5. Red decorations, red envelopes containing money (hongbao), and fireworks are used because red is culturally associated with good fortune and protection from evil influences in traditional Chinese belief.
