This talk draws upon twenty years of research and work experience between North America, Eastern Europe and Ukraine. Both challenges and opportunities have emerged for forming more resilient international research, new platforms for communication, and co-creative practices which open dialogue between interlocutors about common interests. The self-determination of individuals through artistic and creative communities becomes generative of emancipatory vocabularies and civic imagination. How have new platforms for artistic communication and co-creative practices shaped possibilities for a shared global ethics in concepts of "democracy" and "empathy," particularly through the 21st century revolutions and war in Ukraine?

The series explored forms and patterns of resistance, opposition, non-compliance or protest in Europe’s East, both past and present. The lectures discussed manifestations of resistance in the region’s history, the long-term legacies of dissent, innovative forms of protest, and the role of culture in shaping critical views of politics and society. We are delighted to announce our last event of the year, organised in partnership with the International Literature Festival Dublin: a conversation with historian and author Serhii Plokhy on 25 May 6 pm about his recent book Chernobyl Roulette.

Serhii Plokhy is the author of Chernobyl: History of a Tragedy, which won the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Pushkin House Book Prize, and the New York Times bestseller The Gates of Europe, among others. He is Professor of History at Harvard University and Director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. He will be in conversation with Dr Conor Daly from TCD.

Join us for the last event of our lecture series, a roundtable discussion on

"Resistance in Europe’s East: Legacies of the Past and Prospects for the Future"

on 10 April 6 pm in the Robert Emmett Theatre.

The roundtable will offer an opportunity to take stock of what has been over the past several weeks: to identify both common themes and areas of difference; to explore where next for the study of dissent in Europe’s East. Discussion to include: To what extent is resistance in Europe’s East unique? Why have agents of cultural resistance in the region tried so hard to avoid being labelled? How has the end of the 'Iron Curtain' affected the experience and practice of cultural protest?

Exploring patterns of resistance, opposition, non-compliance and protest in the eastern regions of Europe - both past and present.

The Trinity Centres for Global Intercultural Communications; Resistance Studies; and Forced Migration Studies invite scholars, postgraduate students, educators, policymakers, and activists in diverse settings to submit papers exploring the intersections of modern communication across four vital themes: the intersection of language with identity formation, power structures and resistance movements; the evolving landscapes of communication technologies and their societal impact; the communicative dimensions of border and migration experiences; and innovative approaches to training and education that foster resilience in an increasingly complex world. We welcome empirical research, theoretical frameworks, case-studies and practice-based investigations that contribute to our understanding of how communication shapes and is shaped by contemporary global challenges.
