TU Dublin Computer Science Mälardalen UniversityEuropean Digital Learning Network TELECOM SudParis and Informatics Europe launched a survey in January 2020 reaching over 150 European Universities from more than 20 countries. We asked them if they teach ethics in their universities, how and why.

Where were the participants from?
23 countries were represented among the 61 respondents that took part in this survey. The majority of the EU member countries are represented, as well as several other European countries. 20% of the respondents are from institutions in Italy, we performed a careful analysis to ensure this didn't bias the results.

What kind of universities do they work in?
One-third of the respondents are from institutions that focus exclusively on technical subjects (e.g. technical universities), whereas around two-thirds are from institutions that provide a broader range of content.

What’s the size of their institution?
A wide range of institution sizes are represented in this survey, with the number of students ranging from 1-1000 to 50000+. Most of them are big universities, 79% having more than 10000 students. The majority of institutions surveyed have between 100 and 2500 students enrolled in Computer Science programmes.

At which level is Computer Science offered?
Of the 61 institutions surveyed, only 3 exclusively teach postgraduate programmes, and 1 exclusively teaches undergraduate, whereas the majority teaches a combination of both.

Do their institutions teach ethics?
36% of the respondents report that their institutions are not teaching Computer Ethics in their Computer Science programmes. This is a concerning statistic and highlights the need for implementing the teaching of Ethics in European Higher Education.

Our report on Existing Competencies in the Teaching of Ethics in Computer Science Faculties is out!

Our research report combines results from a survey conducted as part of the Ethics4EU project in 2020 on teaching practices for digital ethics across Europe with a survey conducted by Informatics Europe in 2019 on requirements for the instruction of digital ethics at European Universities. The report summarises existing practices and outlines possible approaches for developing the future curricula of ethics in Computer Science programs.

📆 Wednesday 2nd December the Ethics4EU team will run a very special online event on Data Ethics. Four lecturers from two Computer Science Faculties in Ireland and France will introduce you to the ethical implications of data management and how to teach them in Computer Science faculties using a case study driven approach.

If you’re working in Higher Education, either as a lecturer, professor, researcher, or PhD student, and have an interest in Digital Ethics, this event is for you! If you are thinking of introducing Digital Ethics lectures in your modules/courses, this event will give you insights on how to do it in a pragmatic, case study based way.

Behind the Code might also be of interest to students in Computer Science Faculties that feel Digital Ethics should be introduced in their courses or that wish to understand its importance.

📆 On October 8, Dympna O'Sullivan and will speak about how digital products and services are producing unprecedented amounts of data worldwide at Development Studies Association - DSA Ireland.

These products and services have broad reach and include many users and consumers in the Global South. Once data is collected it is often used to create large and valuable datasets. A lack of data protection regulation in the Global South has led to concerns about digital colonization and a lack of control of their data on the part of citizens in this context. In this talk, Dympna will discuss how we are developing a new digital ethics curriculum for the instruction of computer science students.

Dr. O'Sullivan will then present studies she and her team have developed with a focus on data ethics in the context of the Global South that allow students to evaluate the implications of introducing new digital products and services in a developing world context.

Two researchers on the Ethics4EU project, Brendan Tierney and Damian T. Gordon (TU Dublin Computer Science) have contributed chapters to an upcoming book from O'Reilly Media which will be released in August 2020.

It's a must read if you want to learn how to ensure that you are ethical in your data science and analytics efforts.

Two researchers on the Ethics4EU project, Brendan Tierney and Damian Gordon (TU Dublin) have contributed chapters to an upcoming book “97 Things about Ethics Everyone in Data Science Should Know” from O’Reilly Media which will be released in August 2020.
