They say that for every person you know, there is another person a whole, breathing soul folded quietly inside them, that you will never know.
Wow imagine that now read that again sit with it and let it fully sink in.
They say that for every person you know, there is another person a whole, breathing soul folded quietly inside them, that you will never know.
Imagine a whole other self whose voice you’ve never heard,
whose face you’ve never seen,
whose prayers and storms
move beneath the calm surface
they show to the world.
Within each of us too there is a golden light, Our golden shadow
the part of us that dreams
of tenderness, of healing, of good of love and kindness.
And alongside that there is our dark, shadow the part of us that flinches from being seen, the part that slips through unguarded moments through a sigh too sharp, a silence too long, a word that bruises before it’s even spoken.
We are not our cruelty, but sometimes it borrows our mouths.
We are not our ego or pride,
but sometimes it writes our emails, organises our meetings,
and calls it purpose.
Sometimes we build sacred things communities, callings, contemplative lives and forget that holiness is not the work,
but the way we hold one another
while doing it.
We say we mean no harm,
and mostly, we don’t. Yet the harm still happens in the spaces between good intentions and unexamined hearts.
We bruise others by forgetting
to see them fully, by mistaking our vision for truth.
There are many people
walking beside us in many situations throughout our lives
whose names we know but whose souls we’ve never met.
There are parts of ourselves
we’ve never dared to greet
the golden, waiting to bless and
the dark, longing to be seen.
The human individual is a very complex, complicated being,
woven from threads of memory experience and meaning.
Our laughter stitched beside our grief.
Our courage born from quiet devastations.
Our gentleness shaped by what we have survived.
Each one of us carries stories the world may never hear, sacred maps drawn in invisible ink
guiding us through the unseen within.
I think though that our deepest kindness is not in never wounding, but in noticing when we do.
Accepting when we have.
When we cause another pain even if we didn’t intend to we need
to pause,
to breathe,
to turn back,
and whisper into the silence we’ve made or created between us that:
I see you.
I’m sorry.
I am learning.
Please forgive me.
