A child does not learn regulation by being told to “calm down.”

They learn it through connection, co-regulation, and the nervous system of the adults around them.

Before a child can consistently manage big emotions on their own, they often need to experience calm with a safe, regulated adult.

This is why your own regulation matters.

It is not about being calm all the time. It is about noticing when you are becoming overwhelmed, pausing, taking a breath, and finding your way back to yourself.

Your calm can become part of their safety.

At Sensory Space, we support children, young people, adults, and families through therapy, creative approaches, education, and sensory-based support.

Save this post as a reminder: regulation starts with connection.

We are so happy to announce that Sensory Space is now a partner with NOW Group 🤍

A huge thank you to Jenny for such a wonderful conversation and for taking the time to explore how we can work together to create more opportunities for the people we support.

They provide free employment support and training programmes across Ireland and Northern Ireland, with offices in Dublin, Belfast, Derry, Enniskillen and Omagh, as well as services in several other counties. (nowgroup)

Their support includes one-to-one employment guidance, CV and interview preparation, accredited training, work placements and support to help people thrive in employment. (nowgroup)

This partnership feels like a very natural fit for Sensory Space.

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to develop their strengths, build confidence and find meaningful opportunities that are right for them.

If you or someone you know is looking for support with training or finding employment, we encourage you to take a look at what NOW Group offers.

We are really looking forward to working together and seeing where this partnership takes us. 🤍

Some feelings are easier to paint than to explain.

Today, one of our wonderful clients created this beautiful piece during a session at Sensory Space — full of colour, emotion, imagination, and safety. A little house, bright skies, flowers, movement… every detail tells its own story.

For many children, creative therapies provide a gentle way to process emotions, build confidence, and feel understood in their own unique way.

One small moment of expression can become a very big step forward.

See the magic through their eyes ❤️

You can tell she’s a special needs mum without her saying a word.

She arrives at the hospital much later than she should have…
because she spent days hoping things would settle on their own.

Not because she ignores pain.
But because she’s used to putting herself last.

And even sitting in A&E, exhausted and hooked to drips, her first thoughts are still:
“Is my child okay?”
“Are they coping without me?”
“Did someone remember their safe foods?”
“Will bedtime be okay without me there?”

Because when you’re raising a child with additional needs, your nervous system rarely switches off.

And then something strange happens in that hospital bed…

You become overwhelmingly grateful for the smallest things:
☕ A hot coffee someone else made.
🍪 Food placed in front of you.
Being told to rest instead of being needed.
Sleeping without listening for every sound.
Someone asking how YOU feel for once.

I remember lying there looking at biscuits, doughnuts and a cup of tea… feeling emotional simply because somebody was caring for me.

Then my child brought me a handwritten note saying:
“Mummy get well soon.”

And honestly… that broke me in the softest way.

Special needs mums carry so much silently.
The planning.
The masking.
The hypervigilance.
The guilt for even needing help.

So if you know one, check on her too.
Not just her child. 💛

At Sensory Space, we believe supporting a child also means supporting the parent carrying the world on their shoulders.

This little dinosaur honestly made our day at Sensory Space today 🦖💚

What started as a fun video quickly turned into so much laughter, conversation and joy. Watching the toy repeat words back in different languages made everyone smile — and reminded us how powerful playful communication can be.

Sometimes the best learning moments happen naturally through play, connection and feeling safe enough to use your voice.

“This dinosaur speaks everyone’s language 🦖”

A playful little toy that encourages speech, confidence and interaction while making communication feel fun and pressure-free.

Save this for your next sensory-friendly toy idea ✨

Not every child connects with traditional therapy — and that’s okay.

Sometimes the biggest progress happens through creativity, sensory play and feeling safe enough to explore at their own pace.

Art therapy can support:
• fine motor skills
• hand-eye coordination
• emotional regulation
• focus and confidence
• sensory exploration through play

From scooping and moulding to painting and sensory trays, children develop important everyday skills while simply feeling like they’re playing. 🎨

Traditional parenting doesn’t fit every child.

There’s nothing more painful than feeling judged as a parent — especially when you’re already doing everything you can. One comment from a professional can plant doubt that follows you home. But many families raising neurodivergent children discover that “traditional” parenting advice simply doesn’t fit their child’s needs. At Sensory Space, we believe parents deserve support, not blame.

Just because a public health nurse, teacher, therapist, or specialist questions your parenting, doesn’t mean they truly understand your child.

Traditional parenting strategies were largely designed around neurotypical children. Neurodivergent children often communicate, regulate emotions, process sensory input, and respond to the world differently. What works for one child may completely overwhelm another.

You are not “too soft”.
You are not “doing it wrong”.
You are learning your child’s language.

And that matters.

No professional spends the same amount of time with your child as you do. You notice the small triggers, the hidden anxieties, the quiet wins, the moments others miss. That instinct is powerful.

The best outcomes happen when professionals work with parents — not against them. Because parenting a neurodivergent child is not about forcing them into traditional expectations. It’s about understanding who they are and helping them thrive in a way that feels safe, supported, and authentic.

“Every child is unique” isn’t just a phrase — it should shape the entire approach around them.

Save this for the days self-doubt creeps in.
Trust yourself. Keep advocating. 💛
