A summer job does not automatically mean a lower student grant.

For the 2026/27 academic year, SUSI may deduct up to €8,830 of eligible earnings received by the applicant from employment outside term time. SUSI calls this the Holiday Earnings deduction.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵:

❌ Any money a student earns during the holidays automatically reduces their SUSI grant.

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁:

✅ Eligible holiday earnings may be removed from the household’s reckonable income calculation, up to the maximum deduction of €8,830.

✅ The earnings must still be declared on the SUSI application.

✅ If applying for 2026/27, SUSI generally assesses income received during 2025. This means money earned from a summer job in 2026 would not normally form part of the income assessment for the 2026/27 application.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆?

The deduction applies to employment income earned by the applicant outside normal term time, including during:

🐣 Easter holidays
☀️ Summer holidays
🎄 Christmas holidays

The applicant must have been in education while earning the holiday income. For full-time students, the course being applied for must also be an approved full-time course.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗜 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿?

📄 Payslips showing when the income was earned

📄 A completed Holiday Earnings Form signed and stamped by the employer, where payslips are unavailable

📄 Confirmation from the school or college where work took place during dates that may normally fall within term time, such as May or September

SUSI says it will request supporting documents where declaring Holiday Earnings could improve the applicant’s grant assessment.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝘁:

Do not leave the income off the application. Declare the applicant’s full earnings and provide the Holiday Earnings information so SUSI can decide what deduction applies.
