🚨Education Alert: Why Bilingual Hispanic Teachers Make a Big Difference for English Learners

A new study, by the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, found that Hispanic English learners perform better in school when they have a Hispanic teacher with a bilingual language certification.

“Past research has often found that Black teachers, in particular, offer a benefit to all students, no matter their racial/ethnic background, and there is some emerging research that shows Latino educators offer similar benefits, said Christopher J. Nellum, executive director of EdTrust-West.”

After comparing multiple scenarios, the study found that Hispanic students taught by Hispanic teachers scored higher on standardized tests. This is since Hispanic teachers with a bilingual certification can teach academic content in multiple languages.

The study did include scenarios with Hispanic students taught by white teachers with a bilingual language certification, but they didn’t have any effect on student performance in those cases. The trick is having cultural competence in addition to the language.
