Year 3 had a special delivery this morning of different types of letters. ✉️ We explored a range of informal letters such as, thank you letters, post cards and letters to friends and family. We identified what features the letters all had in common e.g address, date, greeting, chatty language and sign off. The children then highlighted and labeled their letters. ✍🏼

Have a look at this snippet of fantastic progress from one of my Year 2 children between Autumn and Summer.

This child came to Year 2 working below the age related expectations and with English as an additional language.

I quickly assessed her phonic and reading ability and made an individual learning plan with SMART targets. As well as differentiating lessons and activities, this child received weekly reading, writing and phonic interventions.

Hundreds, tens and ones! 🧮

I created these simple HTO’s grids to help my children lay out their column addition.

First, we used concrete base 10, then pictorials and finally the abstract - writing the numbers onto the grids. I found this helped the children line the numbers up easily and provided a clear visual of the columns.

✏️ Working Walls are a powerful classroom tool that can be used to model, motivate and engage children.

Today, we used our WW to think of abstract and descriptive adjectives to describe Peter Pan as we are learning the text using T4W.

After modeling, the children came up with their own adjectives and physically added them to the WW - this gives children ownership over their learning.

When all of the adjectives were put up, each child could magpie their peers idea and use the adjectives to write meaningful sentences.

As you can see I included a WAGOLL description of Tinkerbell so the children could magpie but not copy.

A working wall should be a work in progress, not a work of art. ✏️

Every child is different and so every child has a different way in which they learn or retain information. A good teacher realises this and will cater their teaching/lessons to suit the child’s needs. 💡

Here is one of my lovely students getting stuck into some sentence structure work! Unscrambling sentences is a great way to develop children’s understanding of what makes a complete sentence and what doesn’t e.g. capital letters, nouns, verbs and punctuation. At A * tuition, I work together with pupils and parents to create a tailored individual education plan. We discuss targets/area for development and how the child likes to learn. This gives children ownership over their learning and allows me to plan stimulating lessons catered to them. ⭐️
