For St Angela’s History week, 5th Year History Students and Model United Nations delegates travelled to Dublin with Ms O’Grady and Mr Terry to visit Leinster House. After calling in to the National Archaeological Museum next door, they met with Pádraig Rice TD and his parliamentary assistant to learn about their experiences of working in politics. This was followed by a very informative tour of Leinster House, which included a visit to the Dáil and Seanad chambers.

Our Irish Angus Competition winners have had a very busy few weeks! We are so proud of all that they have achieved. Here's an update from the 3 girls.

Day 1

Visit to Tesco Headquarters - We started our day in Tesco giving presentations to the company about our projects, informing them of the work we had done. We then received presentations from Tesco experts about Tesco’s values and the farm to fork process.

Next we took part in a sensory analysis test where we compared Certified Irish Angus beef to an own brand. Overall we noticed a huge difference between the brands, and the Certified Irish Angus beef was voted the best!

Visit to Airfield Estate - We traveled to Airfield estate where we had a delicious lunch. Then we gave our presentation to Bord Bia experts who in turn gave us a presentation about all of their different teams working to promote Irish food abroad.

Steak challenge cook off - A professional chef demonstrated how to cook the perfect steak. We then got paired up and had a chance to try and replicate the dish.

Rockfield House Kells - we had an overnight stay in Rockfield House Kells Co Meath. Overall it was a great start to our study trip!

Day 2

Visit to Teagasc Grange - The first stop of the day was Teagasc Grange where we presented an overview of our project to Teagasc advisors and then received a tour of the farm in Grange. We saw the Irish Angus calves that they are rearing.

Visit to Hilton food processing plant - We visited Hilton foods where we got the chance to speak about our project to industry experts. We learned valuable information about the superior quality of Irish beef and the care and attention that goes into producing it.

We were then given a tour of Hilton foods processing plant. We saw how our meat is processed through each stage until it gets packaged and ready to be put on our shelves.

Dublin airport - after visiting Hilton we began our journey to Dublin airport to head for Brussels

Arrive in Belgium - we finished the day exploring Brussels and some of the amazing sights!

Day 3 Brussels EU parliament - We started the day visiting the European Parliament. We presented our project and were given a tour of the parliament.

IFA COPA presentation - Our next stop was a visit to IFA COPA where we presented our project to MEP representatives and took part in a questions and answers sessions. We got feedback on our projects and advice that we can use in the future.

Farm shop tour in Leuven - We travelled to Leuven where we visited a farm with a butcher and farm shop. All food produced on the farm is sold in the farm shop along with neighbouring farms produce. This demonstrated the farm to fork process.

Manhattan burgers - To finish our day we had a delicious meal in Manhattan Burgers which is supplied with Certified Irish Angus beef.

Day 4

Farm visit to a Dairy farm in Bruges - This farm taught us about the importance of incorporating technology into agricultural practices. There are two robotic milking machines on this farm as well as a digester. The use of these machines has allowed the farm to operate more smoothly and puts less pressure on the farmer.

Day 5

Veal Farm visit - On our journey to Amsterdam airport we visited a veal farm. This farm housed rose veal and white veal. We received a talk from the owners of this farm in which they explained its management style and the market for veal in the wider world.

This was a trip of a lifetime where we created so many memories and gained so much knowledge along the way. Thank you so much to everyone in Certified Irish Angus, ABP and Kepak for the incredible few days.

Throughout the study trip we learnt about the food sector and food production on numerous occasions. We presented our work that we have done up to date on our project to industry experts. We got feedback that we will be able to use in our research as we progress with our project. This was a trip of a lifetime. We created so many memories and learnt so much knowledge along the way. Thank you so much to everyone in Certified Irish Angus, ABP and Kepak for the incredible few days. We would like to thank Ms C. O' Donovan for accompanying us on the trip.

ABP Factory Trip

Last Friday we visited ABP in Bandon. We got a tour of the factory and got to see how it operates. It was a very informative trip that we all enjoyed. Thanks so much to everyone in ABP for having us.
