🎓 REPEATING THE LEAVING CERT – PART 2

If you decide to repeat, do you have to repeat every subject? Can you carry grades from your previous Leaving Cert? And can you take up a completely new subject in just one year? 🤔

The answer depends very much on the course you’re aiming for.

🩺 Medicine has specific rules around presenting your subjects in the same sitting.

📚 For many other courses, entry requirements and CAO points can be achieved across different Leaving Certificate sittings — meaning you may not need to repeat everything.

And yes — taking up a new Leaving Cert subject in one year can absolutely be an option. With careful subject selection, the right teacher and the right environment, it can be a very successful strategy. 🌟

The important thing? Don’t simply repeat what you did before. Have a strategy for your repeat year.

Repeating the Leaving Certificate is a big decision. It means committing to another year of school and, in many cases, a significant financial investment.

For some students, repeating is absolutely the right decision. For others, there may be alternative routes that will help them reach their goal more effectively — and possibly more quickly. 🧭

At Hewitt College Cork, our priority is always the student first. 💙 We will never recommend repeating simply because it is better business for us. We will recommend it only when we genuinely believe it is the best route for that individual student.

Remember, it’s not the be-all and end-all. Be proud of yourself and the effort you have put in. No matter what happens, you can always find a path to your dream job or career— while CAO is one way, it certainly isn’t the only way.

Keep learning and exploring; there are many paths to reach your destination.

📢 LEAVING CERT 2026: SCRIPT VIEWING & APPEALS

With Leaving Cert results being released tomorrow, Friday 21 August at 10am, it’s important that students are aware of the key dates that follow.

📅 25 August, 12pm – Access to examination data
📄 25 August, 5pm – Applications to view scripts open
⏰ 26 August, 8pm – Applications to view scripts close
👀 29–30 August – Script viewing
📝 30 August, 10am – Appeals open
⏰ 31 August, 5pm – Appeals close
📬 25 September, 11am – Provisional date for appeal results
💶 Appeal fees:
Leaving Certificate – €40 per subject
Leaving Certificate Applied – €15.50 per subject
✅ The appeal fee is refunded if the appeal is successful.
Remember: applying to view your script is free of charge.

🚨 DIDN’T GET THE MATHS GRADE YOU NEEDED?
Your college course may not be gone.
If you have enough CAO points but missed the minimum Maths requirement, several Irish colleges offer a Second Chance/Special Maths Exam or alternative route. ➗🎓
Here are some of the main 2026 options:
📍 MTU — Second Chance Mathematics Exam
🗓 25 August | Cork & Kerry
Ordinary & Higher Level papers | €30–€50
📍 UL — Special Entrance Mathematics Examination
🗓 27 August
For eligible courses requiring Higher Level Maths, particularly Science & Engineering.
📍 SETU — Second Chance Maths Entry Exam
🗓 28 August | Waterford or Carlow
Based on Ordinary Level Maths | FREE
Eligible even if you passed Maths but missed the required grade. Some courses, including Nursing, are excluded.
📍 DkIT — Additional Maths Entry Examination
🗓 28 August | €30
For eligible applicants to DK843, DK844, DK845 & DK846 Engineering. Registration closes 24 August at 5pm.
📍 University of Galway — Engineering Maths Qualifying Exam
🗓 29 August
For eligible Engineering applicants who don't achieve the required H4 in Maths. Both papers must be taken.
📍 TU Dublin — Mathematics Competency Test
Specifically for TU805 Engineering (General Entry) applicants who need to meet the H4 Maths requirement.
📍 ATU — Enabling Mathematics
A FREE programme providing another opportunity to meet the Maths requirement for a range of ATU courses.
⚠️ Remember: these options do NOT change your Leaving Cert Maths grade or give you extra CAO points. You must still meet the other entry requirements, have sufficient CAO points and, where applicable, a place must be available in a later CAO round.
⏰ Most importantly — act quickly. Some of these opportunities take place only DAYS after Leaving Cert results.
So if Maths is the one thing standing between you and your course, don't automatically assume the door is closed. ❤️

Worried that your Leaving Certificate Maths result may affect your college place? There may still be another option. ➗🎓

Some colleges offer a second-chance Maths exam for students who do not meet the Maths entry requirement for certain courses. These exams don’t provide additional CAO points, and you must generally meet all other entry requirements.

If successful, you may be eligible to receive an offer in CAO Round Two. ✅

Not every college or course offers this opportunity, so always check the specific requirements carefully.

💊 A Pharmacist’s Journey – Part 2

So, what does it actually take to become a pharmacist? 🎓

Pharmacy is a five-year degree and an extremely challenging course. Students need a strong understanding of chemistry, pharmacology, the human body and disease — as well as how different drugs and medications act on the body. 🧪💊

Another important point for students considering pharmacy: unlike medicine, veterinary medicine or dentistry, there isn’t a shortened graduate-entry route into pharmacy. If pharmacy is ultimately the career you want, this is definitely something to consider when choosing your college course.

The level and depth of study involved tells you a lot about the knowledge and responsibility required of a pharmacist — and why there’s far more to this career than simply “counting tablets”! 👩‍⚕️

💊 A Pharmacist’s Journey – Part 1

“Pharmacy? Isn’t that just counting tablets all day?” 🤔

It’s a misconception I hear surprisingly often when speaking with students and parents/guardians- but the reality is very different.

Pharmacists have huge responsibility. They check medications and dosages, identify potentially dangerous interactions and prescribing errors, advise patients on the safe use of medicines, support people with long-term conditions, provide vaccinations and offer advice on minor illnesses. 🩺💉

And for those running a community pharmacy, there’s a whole business to manage too- staff, stock, ordering and much more!

So, is pharmacy just about counting tablets? Definitely not! 💊
