St. Columba's GNS with Facility for Deaf Children

St. Columba's GNS with Facility for Deaf Children St. Columba's GNS with Facility for Deaf Children is situated on a five acre campus in the heart of Douglas, dedicated to children's learning and welfare

Situated on a five acre campus in the heart of Douglas, our school has been a centre for learning for over 100 years. Our most important rescource, our staff of 40 teachers, are dedicated to children’s learning and welfare. In addition, we also have classroom assistants, administrative and maintenance staff. The school is divided into 2 buildings – a Junior and a Senior school. This allows infants

to enjoy a less formal introduction to the educational system. In 1999 we amalgamated with Our Lady’s School for the Hearing Impaired and are dedicated to the advancement of deaf education. We follow the bilingual educational philosophy giving equal recognition to sign language and English and, as a result, all our children, both hearing and deaf, are learning sign language. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences for all concerned. We support Munster Rugby! The main subjects in our school are:
Irish, English, Sign Language, Maths, History, Geography, Science, Visual Arts, Music, Drama, PE, Social, Personal and Health Education and IT Skills. We take a holistic approach to the development of children and encourage a positive, pro-active, self-motivating approach to learning. We see learning as a lifelong process and encourage a sense of wonder, curiosity and joy in achievement. Our school emphasises and encourages the individuality of each child, including children with special educational needs.

Remembering our beautiful angel Liana today on her 3rd anniversary. 💜

We are so grateful for all the wonderful memories and fun times we were lucky enough to share with Liana at school. She brought so much happiness, love and joy to everyone at St Columba’s and taught us all what true courage, strength and love really look like.

Liana will always hold such a special place in our hearts. We remember her, pray for her and miss her so very much today and always. 💜

And that's a wrap!Hope everyone has a lovely summer, from First Class!

🐙 Cool Clay Creations 🐙
The artists in Jennifer's class enjoyed using clay recently. Each child created a clay octopus. They then created long twirly legs with colourful pipe cleaners and added some sparkles with beads. We think they look amazing!

Today, we had the huge honour of welcoming back a much-loved past pupil. Previously known as "The Lord Mayor of St. Columba's", this young man proudly represented Munster at the Special Olympics over the weekend. Returning with FIVE medals, we were thrilled to see him. He met with some of our Deaf pupils, the older of whom can remember looking up to him years ago. How beautiful that he is still such a wonderful role model for our pupils. Thank you for allowing us to share in your excitement and success 🥰✨️🤟🏽🎉🏅
