Bips Project: Body & Emotions

Bips Project: Body & Emotions The BiPS Body and Emotions Project is a longitudinal study currently being conducted by Isabella Mus

The study will use a cross-sequential design following 90 children and adolescents from Ireland (90) and Italy (90) aged 11 to 13. Each person will provide measures of psychosocial as well as bodily development at two time points (6 month intervals), over an 12 month period. The multiple measures provide a rich dataset for examination and testing body dissatisfaction as an outcome of the interacti

on of the biological, psychological and social context. The study adopts a mixed methods approach, and interviews with the adolescent-parent dyad will be completed in addition to standard psychometric measures. The project examines the direct effects of pubertal changes on thoughts, somatic complaints and behaviours and how this is related to emotion regulation and body dissatisfaction, as well as social effects, including the peer context and the cultural representations of the body ideal. The project draws upon the diatheses stress model of adolescent vulnerability to examine the biospychosocial dimensions of body dissatisfaction in adolescence.

👉BiPS Body and Emotions Study

👉What the study is about?
We wish to understand how teenagers, between 11 to 13 years of age, think and feel about the changes in the height and size of their body as they get older. Some teens feel happy about the changes in their body, for example getting taller and larger, but some teens may not. We are also interested to understand the perspective of the parent about these changes.

👉What we will ask participants to do?
Both parents and teenagers will answer an open-ended questionnaire online.

- The teen will be asked questions about their thoughts and feelings about how they growing physically and how they manage their emotions.
- The parent will be asked questions about their relationship with the child and what they remember about when they were teenagers.

Welcome to the official page of the Bips Project: Body & Emotions!

We are seeking teenagers (aged 11 to 13) to participate in a online study about how teenagers feel satisfied with their body. Participation in the study involves the teenager answering online questions about how satisfied they feel with their body, their well-being and their relationships with friends and family.

The BiPS Body and Emotions Project is a longitudinal study currently being conducted by Isabella Muscolino in the School of Applied Psychology under the supervision of Dr. Samantha Dockray.

The study aims to examine how pubertal changes, in combination with processes of psychosocial development, emotion regulation and experience, influence body dissatisfaction and individual’s behaviour.

We are asking 90 boys and girls (aged 11-13 years) to participate to the BiPS Study.

It takes about 30 minutes for the child/teen to do the measures. The measures are questionnaires that can be completed online with a tablet or a smartphone or a computer.
