Today we look at the final qualification in the Performance suite: Devising Drama.

This qualification teaches skills including:
- voice, diction and movement
- creating a character and situation within a dramatic structure
- how to engage with a character and situation in order to create a sense of reality
- knowing and understanding how to devise scenes for performance

This qualification is great for students who like to use their imaginations to create new work. It’s great for students who want to create characters and new work from their imagination without being constrained by existing texts. It’s great for beginners or those who already have some performance experience. I use a holistic approach to build confidence and a wide range of vocal and physical skills, that will help the student both in theatrical performances and other areas of life, such as interviews and presentations.

Students will work with me to determine the best starting point based on their age and prior experience, with grades becoming increasingly challenging as they move from Entry Level up to Grade 8 (Gold Medal Award).

Please send me a message if you’d like to know more, or to book a taster lesson.

Our posts continue today with the second qualification in the Acting syllabus: Miming.

This qualification teaches skills including:
- developing original work from a stimulus
- physical awareness, control, precision and coordination
- how to communicate an activity, situation and character through mime
- how to engage with an activity, situation and/or character in order to create a sense of reality
- how to create and structure mimes and mime scenes for performance

This qualification is great for students who like to use their imaginations to create new work. It’s great for students who feel less confident in vocal skills or who particularly want to develop their physical performance skills.

Our posts continue today by moving on to the Performance syllabi, where the best known of the options is Acting.

This qualification teaches skills including:
- how to engage imaginatively with texts
- vocal skills such as articulation and interpretation through the use of vocal colour
- how to create and sustain a character throughout a performance
- physical performance skills such as facial expression, body language, and movement

This qualification is great for students who like to work with an existing text and who love to play a wide variety of different characters.

Our next looks at the last qualification from the Communication syllabus: Reading for Performance.

This qualification teaches skills including:
- how to engage imaginatively with texts
- vocal skills including articulation and interpretation through the use of vocal colour
- how to put together and present a recital
- how to engage an audience
- understanding language choices and meanings

This qualification is great for students who may struggle with learning verse and prose pieces from memory, and those who like to present a collection of performances based around a theme. And, of course, it’s great for students who love to read aloud! Similar to Speaking Verse and Prose, students work with pre-existing pieces but have the opportunity to write their own links to create the recital as a whole.

Students will work with me to determine the best starting point based on their age and prior experience, with grades becoming increasingly challenging as they move from Entry Level up to Grade 8 (Gold Medal Award).

Please send me a message if you’d like to know more, or to book a taster lesson.

Speaking Verse and Prose is our next . It’s also part of the Communication syllabus but, unlike Speaking in Public, it does not require students to write their own material.

This qualification teaches a range of skills including:
- voice technique and control
- using vocal and physical skills to communicate meaning
- exploring prose and verse pieces by a range of authors/poets
- discussing meaning and technical aspects of pieces of verse and prose

It’s a great choice for students who already enjoy reading and like to have variety in terms of the pieces performed. It still teaches confidence and public speaking skills without the pressure of having to create your own material. In addition, it allows students to be creative in performance without having to fully take on a role as they would in the Acting qualifications.

Students will work with me to determine the best starting point based on their age and prior experience, with grades becoming increasingly challenging as they move from Entry Level up to Grade 8 (Gold Medal Award).

Please send me a message if you’d like to know more, or to book a taster lesson.

For today’s we are going to take a look at the first (and probably most well known) qualification from the Communication syllabus: Speaking in Public.

This qualification teaches a range of skills including:
- voice technique and control
- speaking to a range of audiences
- creating speeches for different purposes and contexts
- holding conversations with other people
- research, and development of knowledge and understanding, on a range of topics

It’s the perfect choice if you want to build confidence in your public speaking ability for giving presentations, attending interviews, or simply in social situations.

Students will work with me to determine the best starting point based on their age and prior experience, with grades becoming increasingly challenging as they move from Entry Level up to Grade 8 (Gold Medal Award).

I firmly believe that speech and drama training shouldn’t be restricted to those from wealthy backgrounds. This is why my prices are some of the most competitive you’ll find, and I haven’t raised them in four years.

Booking directly with me means there is no middle man or agent, so I can keep my fees lower.

Send me a message to find out how your child/young person can start their training this week.

For the first I am going to break down the different syllabi that LAMDA offers.

The two most well known are the Communication and Acting syllabi, closely followed by the Musical Theatre syllabus. Finally there is the Shakespeare for Performance syllabus and the Group Graded Examination syllabus.

The Communication syllabus covers the ever popular Speaking in Public exam, Speaking Verse and Prose and Reading for Performance.

Meanwhile the Acting syllabus features qualifications in Acting, Devising and Mime. The first of these involves working with scripted pieces but the other two allow for students to create their own work.

The remaining three syllabi are fairly self explanatory, covering one exam subject each, and all involve working with existing scripted pieces and songs.

In future Friday posts I will break down the different qualifications so you can learn more about them and discover which might be the right choice for you or your child.
