The 2026 Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) is paid this week.

💵 This is a means-tested payment to help with the cost of school uniforms and shoes.

In 2026, you can get:

👉 €160 for children aged 2 to 11
👉 €285 for children aged 12 to 22

If you don’t get a payment this week, you can apply for the BSCFA until 30 September 2026.

As schools finish up for the summer, many parents are juggling work, childcare and changing family routines.

One question that can come up is whether a child is ready to spend some time at home without an adult.

In Ireland, there is 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗴𝗲 for leaving a child home alone. However, parents and guardians are responsible for making sure their child is safe and properly cared for.

Before making that decision, it can help to think about:

Would your child know what to do if something unexpected happened?

📞 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁
Can they contact you or another trusted adult quickly?

Is it for a very short time, or a longer period?

🏠 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆
Do they know the house rules, including what to do about doors, callers, cooking, pets and screens?

💬 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁
Does your child feel safe and confident being left on their own?

If you are considering it, start small, talk through different scenarios, leave clear instructions and check in afterwards.

Every child is different. The right decision depends on their age, maturity, confidence and the circumstances at home.
