Changes are coming!

The 1st November 2026 learner permit changes will affect both existing and new permit holders. Make sure you understand how the new rules apply to you.

As of 1st November 2026, if you are:

Applying for your third learner permit:
✔️ You must have sat and failed a driving test in the previous 2 years

Applying for your fourth learner permit:
✔️ You must have sat and failed a driving test in the previous 2 years
✔️ This permit will only be valid for one year

On your fourth or more learner permit:
✔️ You can no longer renew your learner permit and must begin the learning to drive process again:

1. Pass a Driver Theory Test in the category
2. Apply for new Learner Permit
3. Complete EDT* or IBT (16–18 hrs for motorbikes) before your next driving test - *Reduced EDT can only be availed of once - (All 12 lessons required if previously utilised)

📌All learner permit holders whose permit is expired for 2 years or more (on or after 1st November 2026) must also begin the learning to drive process again

A driving school car is there to train the next generation of drivers. You’ll have seen one recently on your way to work, to the shops or on a family trip.
They’re easy enough to spot with the big red L.

Driving instructors go through tough training and regular assessments. Only around one in five people who start the qualification process become Approved Driving Instructors. We work hard to teach learners the standard expected of every driver on the road.

If you feel stuck behind a learner, remember that you had to learn once too. It could be their first time on a main road. They might be on a mock test, or even their real driving test.
You simply don’t know.

Beeping, tailgating or swerving around them won’t help. It only puts more pressure on someone who is already concentrating hard and sets a poor example.

The best thing you can do is give them space. Leave at least a two-second gap in the dry and four seconds in the wet. They’ll soon turn off or pull up, and keeping a steady distance helps traffic flow more smoothly too.

Give learners a bit of respect.
They’re trying hard, just as you did when you had that big red L on the car.

To everyone who shows patience and courtesy towards learner drivers, on behalf of instructors everywhere, thank you. You make life in the passenger seat much easier.

🚗 The L Plate Illusion 🚗

When you see a learner car with big red L plates, what do you think?
“Slow.” “In the way.” “Holding me up.”

But here’s the truth: those L plates don’t mean the driver is lazy or clueless they mean they’re learning to juggle one of the most complex skills you’ll ever take on.

Behind those plates is someone:
Coordinating mirrors, pedals, steering, and gears all at once.
Processing traffic lights, signs, pedestrians, cyclists, and sat nav instructions.
Battling nerves, anxiety, and the pressure of being watched.

👉 The illusion is that learners are “just slow.”

The reality is they’re working harder than anyone else on the road.

So next time you see an L plate in front of you, remember:
You were there once.
They need space, patience, and encouragement.
With your respect today, they’ll become a safer driver tomorrow.

Every confident driver was once the nervous learner holding up traffic.

Be kind.
