"You can never get enough books into the hands of young children" - (Dolly Parton), a sentiment we all share in Cavan County Library Services.

Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Dolly Parton helped foster a love of books, stories and reading in children across the world. A Literacy Champion who knew how crippling literacy difficulties can be.

If you need help with reading or writing contact Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board - CMETB or www.adultliteracyforlife.ie to find out how to take the first steps to improving your literacy.

A musician, actress, writer, business woman, philanthropist and many other things, we will 'pour a cup of ambition' in your honour. ☕️

Celebrating the Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence.

The Ukrainian community gathered in Johnston Central Library to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence.

The celebrations focused on the importance of Literature as a way of preserving identity and culture and those in attendance were treated to poetry readings and a musical performance.

Cavan County Library Service were delighted to accept a very generous donation of Ukrainian language books which were provide by AURI's 'Native Word' project supported by the International Charity Bazaar at the RDS in Dublin. These books will be available in the library for many to enjoy.

Thank you to An Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council for opening the event and to Sergiy Balan, Chairperson of the Ukrainian Association in the Republic of Ireland for organising such a wonderful event.

Heritage Week continues with gusto at Virginia Library tomorrow afternoon with this lovely event orgnanised and facilitated by Women Without Borders – Multicultural Women’s Shed. 🌿
We invite you to join us for 'Taste of Childhood: Voices Before They Fade', a special community gathering celebrating the memories, traditions, stories and flavours that connect us all.

📅 Saturday, 22 August 2026
⏰ 2:00pm - 4:30pm
📍 Virginia Library, Main Street, Virginia, Co. Cavan A82 PA03

In the true spirit of National Heritage Week, this event recognises that heritage is not just found in buildings and artefacts, but in the treasured memories, recipes, songs, traditions and stories passed from generation to generation and shared across cultures.

Bring along: 🍲 A childhood dish to share
📸 1-3 childhood photographs for the Photo Zone
💬 Stories, recipes, traditions, songs and memories

Enjoy an afternoon of conversation, cultural exchange, children's activities, tea, and the opportunity to help create a living heritage archive for future generations.

This is a free event and everyone is welcome.

🌿 National Heritage Week 2026 | Taste of Childhood – Voices Before They Fade 🌿

What does your childhood taste like?

Maybe it is a dish your mother or grandmother used to make. Maybe it is a family recipe, an old photograph, a song, a story, a tradition — or simply a memory that instantly takes you back home.

On Saturday, 22 August, we invite people of all cultures, nationalities and generations to come together at Virginia Library and share a little piece of their childhood.

📍 Virginia Library, Main Street, Virginia, Co. Cavan
📅 Saturday, 22 August 2026
🕑 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
💚 Free community event – everyone is welcome

We would love you to bring:

🍲 One favourite dish from your childhood, prepared by you, to share with others
📸 1–3 printed childhood photos for our shared Childhood Photo Zone
📖 A family recipe, story, song, tradition or special memory

During the afternoon we will hear childhood stories from people from different countries, taste traditional dishes, look through old photographs, share family traditions and create a small living heritage archive together.

Our children are growing up in a different world — and sometimes far away from the places where their parents and grandparents grew up. Recipes, songs, traditions and stories can slowly disappear between generations.

This day is about keeping them alive. ❤️

Different countries. Different childhoods. Shared memories. One community.

If you would like to bring a dish or share a short childhood story, please comment below or send us a message with your country and the name of your dish.

Organised by Women Without Borders – Multicultural Women’s Shed with the support of our community partners, as part of National Heritage Week 2026.
