As part of the Cavan County Libraries Autumn Lecture Series, our Keeper of Public Services, Zoe Reid, will be speaking at Virginia Library.

Zoe will share the fascinating history and impact of the 1926 Census, while taking you behind the scenes at the National Archives to show what it takes to conserve and digitise over 45 million pieces of data.

Upcoming Lecture: 'A Century Sealed: The 1926 Census and the National Archives', by Dr. Zoë Reid.

The third lecture in our Autumn series for 2026 takes place on Thursday, October 22nd at 7.00pm at Virginia Library, A82 PA03.

The release of the 1926 Census has transformed access to the earliest demographic record of the Irish Free State. Now fully digitised and searchable, over 700,000 household returns reveal a society marked by rural life, demographic decline and the administrative priorities of a new state.

We were joined by an attentive audience for Thursday evening's lecture in Johnston Central Library as we welcomed Dr. Georgina Laragy, Trinity College Dublin, who spoke about ‘Workhouses in Cavan, before and after independence.' The presentation explored the workhouses at Bailieborough, Bawnboy, Cavan and Cootehill.

Incidentally, researchers may access the workhouse minute books for Co. Cavan by booking an appointment by email with the County Archivist at [email protected].

The Autumn Lecture Series continues on Thursday October 22nd, in Virginia Library, at 7pm, with a lecture by Dr. Zoë Reid, National Archives of Ireland, on the topic of ‘A Century Sealed: The 1926 Census and the National Archives’.
